Says State Doing More For Schools Than Any State I>i*lty Dtapatcfc Bilrriw. In »fce Sir WnKrr Hotel, nv J. V HA SKRI] V 11.1/. Raleigh. April 19. North Carolina ■is a State, is doing more for public education at the present time than ! iny other State in the union, and is •' constantly striving to do more and ; more to improve the status of pub- i lie education. Leßoy Martin, execu- . five secretary of the State Board of Equalization, told the members of the Rotary club here in discussing the new school laws, particularly the changes that have come about as the result of State support and super vision of the public schools. "While I do not possess the actual figures for this past year for all the States, from the figures I have re ceived and the reports available, there is not doubt that North Carolina to day is jia.ving a larger share of the 1 cost of its public schools from State funds than is any other State,” Mr. 1 Martin said. “This is even more note- | worthy when it is realized that the , greater portion of this State money is : derived from indirect sources instead of from taxes on property. "Another significant fact is that the ! majority of the superintendents, prin- ' ctpals and teachers agree that the! schools have been operated more sat- | isfactorily this year, as a Statewide i school system, than ever before, de spite the fact that the six months school term this year cost approxi mately $4,000,000 leas than it did last year, under the old county unit of! operation system.” Man. however much he may boast of his work, still remains, alike to j all other life, in subjection to nature.
