O. IC£ CREAM is no longer exclu stTely a summer dish. Even a per son of m> by no means advanced rears can remember w hen It was. In fact, a person of my years can re- - ■ _ member when the soda foun- |fl| tain In the cor ner drug store was dismantled - for the winter Ths mirror wn* g»,w|*f(F vl dimmed with ■-.: soap or paste and the flavors removed from the containers. I ?|y " v t When I aa/ "all mean lemon That's all there wa a Chocolate Dr. Clendening aid strawberry did not come until long afterwards. Then, about the last of May or the first of June, the mirror and the spigots would be polished off and the carbon dioxide tanks reinstalled, and the “Soda Water" sign set out for the summer. The Ice cream did not become a staple till later. At first enly on Sunday, a tradition which I made a name for itself (Chocolate swndae) For a long time Ice cream and soda fcmntaln specialties had a bad repu tation among the doctors. They were supposed to cause Indigestion and all manner of troubles. Even Dr. Osier said in hts text book that the great American disease lndigestion came from our soda fountain habits Those Ideas no longer obtain. The doctors can calculate that Jf everyone who ate an ice cream soda suffered from indigestion as a result, the complaints would be uni\ersal in etead of frequent. And. as a matter of experience, soda water Is a very good remedy for acid indigestion. In fact, several people whom I know to have ulcer of the stomach take an Ice cream soda nearly every night before going home ! lo bed. They say It helps them %• ; pet through the night more cot»- | fortably. For active children. Ice cream fvrw nlshes energy in a quickly sMimH. able form. Athletes need carbohfa dratea just aa much aa automobiles need gasoline, and lea cream la ful of them. So when Johnny cornea ii'iarching home from the ball gama where he haa played nine hard In* ninga. It U perfectly natural for him to want some Ice cream or an lea cream soda. 8o far as the effect on digestion Is concerned, most of the fears ex pressed were Vbat the Ice cream would freeze the *tomach. This, how ever. is mostly an unfounded feai and entirely unfounded if the Ice cream Is eaten slowly. Since It la better to eat any meal slowly this makes It no different from any other sort of food. When fresh fruits are added to the ice cream, the combination gains la having one of the Important vita* mins—vitamin C. Ice cream already contains vitamins A and B from the milk and cream. Vitamin Cis prob ably destroyed by Pasteurization * most of the Ice cream you get, so th« addition of some strawberries OT peaches Is welcome as adding this valuable Ingredient once more. Frees ing does not destroy vitamin C, al though heating does. Ice cream should be. and generally is. subject to Inspection and super \ ision by public health authorltlea If clean—that is to say. free from germs—ice cream Is. therefore, one of the most valuable and least harm ful of dishes, summer or winter, and especially palatable In the summer. 57 Cars Stolen In July and 93 Were Recovered Dnlly Dispatch Itn -con, In the Sir Walter Hotel. Raleigh, Aug. 15.—Fifty-seven cars were stolen in July and 93 were re j covered, according to figures releesed by the theft bureau department of ! the division of revenue. I The excess Is nrconted for by the I recovery of many cars stolen before I July and by the recapture of some ' machines brought to the S‘ate from HENDERSON, (N.C.,) DAQjY DESPATCH MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1982 other parts of the country. The re coveries often out number the month's losses. Times have changed. The Ford was for years the favorite of the thelf who took more of Henry’s machines than all others combined. But Chev rolet has crept up in popularity and the robbers like the Chewy mightily. They stole 18 in July while they were taking the 22 Fords, and the State got back 27 of them while recovering oO Fords. The tendency toward faster manufacture of the Chevrolet may roon change this stealing and recover ing ratio.
