These six major oil companies also admitted that thev owned, had under lease or contract 75 per cent of all the filling stations in North Carolina. Within the past, ten days the gaso line companies h.ive increased the re tail. price one cent a gallon. This means that the gasoline companies are taking $7,166 a day more than before thev increased this price, and if continued for 30 days will increase theifc profit within that period $215,- 000. If the one cent a gallon increase should be continued in force for an entire year, the net profit from this increase would umount to $2,580,000, based on a total yearly consumption of 258,000,000 gallons. At present time the big gasoline companies can boost the price of gasoline anywhere from one to three cents without giving any cause or reason, and the public pays the ad ditional $7,166 a day extra and has no redress in the matti r. If the increase is as much as thne cer.ts per gallon the daily Increase In cost amounts to $21,408 a day, it was pointed out here today by L. H. Martin, of Greensboro, secretary of the Associated Oil Job bers-of the Carolinas, tne organiza tion -of the independent gasoi nr; and oil cfetaoiis in North and South Caro lina. ; 4i The public is rbsolutcly at the mertiy of the big oil companies with regard to the prices charged and has absojutely ito protection against arbi trary increases in the price of gaso line Martin said. “If tre oil corn pun es, or any on« of the larger corn paries decide to increase jhe price one cept a gallon, as tney often do, the people go ahead and pay the extra $7 166 a day and a/C* heipjWs to do, anytuing about it."-’' “Tpe electric power companies, tele phone companies' other ' ability companies cannot .cortege topir rates unkwg b y tha (State Coi teem; U *e should bo uudfcr iutne'kina o 4 rejfutis*- ta *«l lectric, gaj, '—— ' l'ir.'if '' i, ... ah' . .■ _ Cary High .12 To 7 Here ipnniAs.” ■ The recent increase of one cent a gallon put Into effect by the major gasoline companies and which forced all the Independent dealers to do the same —whs not warranted, by market conditions, Martin said, who pointed out that there has been litle or no change In the prices of gasoline at the refineries and that here is a btig over supply. Some observers believe hat recent boost of one cent, a gallon is merely the first step in boosting prices back up and to recoiyi the money lost when the large companies recently reduced the price three cents at one time. While Judge N. A. Sinclair has not yet announced his decision as the re sult of the hearing here last week in whgh the oil companies filed de murrers and asked that the State’s suit be dismissed, opinion generally is that Attorney General Brummitt so baiy presented the case for the State that the demurrers will be de nied and the suit eventually tried be fore a jury.
