UASIiICItVILL. Raleigh, Aug. 6.—The record made J by the State Highway Patrol during the past fiscal year, as set out in the report just submitted by Captain Charles D. Farmer, commander of the patrol, was commenced today by Commissioner of Revenue A. J. Max well, under whose general supervision the patrol operates. He also replied to some of the criticism of the report. “We are not bragging about either the amount of revenuel the patrol col lectd, the number of miles travelled and the numbr of arrests made, but in view of the amount of work which the patrol has to do and the limited number of men, I think the patrol made an excellent showing last year”, Commissioner Maxwell said. ‘‘lf the patrol had no other duties .than to patrol the highways and en force the motor vehicle laws, it prob ably could have stopped more cars and made more arrests. But it must be remembered that tne 1933 legislature —not th e Department of Revenue — decreed that patrolmen should collect levnue and act as gasoline and oil in spectors as well as patrol the high ways. It must also be remembered that there are only 56 of these pa trolmen to patrol 70,000 rories of high ways, check more than 400,000 auto mobiles and trucks, coiiect revenue and take samples of gasoline and oil from some 15,000 filling stations and bulk plants over the State. “So in view of these facts, I think the patrol did excellent work last year in patrolling 1,499,474 mires of high way, investigating 1,287 accidents, in specting 7,448 vehicles Lor mechanical defects and stopping 78,591 cars for defective lights, all of which were cor rected In addition to this, patrol men stoppd 63,736 othr cars for vari ous violations of the motor vehicle laws and extended courtesies to 17,- 593 other motorists by helping them change tires, get gasoline or perform ing other services.” But if the patrol is to perform its three-fold duties effectively, it must be enlarged to consist of 200 or 300 men as, Captain Farmer recommend, Commissioner Maxwell maintains. New Orleans Dis pute Now Before Court (Continued from Page One.) board named by local civic organiza tions, was described by the Walmsley faction as “reprisal” for defeat of Huey Long’s candidates by Walmsley men in the last city election. It was attacked in the court on the ground of unconstitutionality, the city claim ing irregularities marked its passage in the legislature. Both Senator (Long and Mayor Walmsley were denounced today at a mass meeting of communists and So cialists opposite city hall, where Long’r troops held one city office and Walms ley’s police garrisoned ciyt hall. Mr. Jenkins Much Improved George V. Jenkins, was said to be very much improved at Maria Parham hospital, where he lias been under going treatment for sometime. It is thought that he wil be carried to his home on Young Avenue within the ji.ext few days. j, NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE.
