The first way in which Vitamin D was added to the diet was by means of cod liver oil. It was afterwards found that other fish liver oils con tain the substance, such as halibut and salmon liver. Depending on the potency of the oil. it should be given in the amount of three to six tea spoons a day. The concentrates, of which there are several, can. of course, be given in smaller doses. The one objection to the use of these substances is that they may upset digestion but. fortunately, we have a means to obviate this should it occur. Several years ago Pro fessor Steenbock. of the University of Wisconsin, discovered that Vita inin D could be formed in various oils and foods if they were exposed to ultra-violet light, which is simi lar to sunlight One of these sub stances is a vegetable oil. named ‘‘ergosterol’’ which, after it is Ir radiated and contains Vitamin D, is called “viosteror. This can be given in small enough amounts so that it cannot possibly upset an infant. It is quite possible to obtain ir radiated milk now 7 in several forms, including irradiated evaporated milk which has been found so successful in infant feeding. Tins milk is ex posed to ultra-violet light, and oy such exposure a high content of Vitamin D is formed. Inasmuch as milk also contains good amounts of the minerals, calcium and phos phorus—-in fact, it is our best source of supply for these —we have in ir radiated milk a complete food, which will prevent the development 01 rickets and also is free from the possibility ot causing digestive up seta*. methods of cur- , ing it after it ■ has de v e loped. 1 Rickets is one of I the diseases for j which we have several such spe- i cities.
