V. SHEPARD |j FAMOUS WIIDOt TIACHM Ai JOHN KEEPS IN TRAINING LIKE A PP.i'ZE fighter who keeps in training, both until he becomes champion of his own class and after wards to remain at the top, so my modest friend, whom I will call ‘‘John", is rapidly reaching national championship condition, by ever striving for an added trick or two on , his hands, regardless of what he needs to fulfill his contracts. Such a man always is in condition to bid slams and make them, where lazier players would fall down. Here is a sample of his work. How many players would bother to play for the fifth trick when not needed, or even realize that it could be made? I be •ieve in John from the rocky New England coast. I believe in the other three players, Gordon, I, eon and Howard, but John had the floor. 4 i* 8 1 f 962 ♦AQ 6 2 4A J 3 *65 * K Q j # H r—77 — 7 ♦Klu 7 »i ' V ‘ • 4 lit 7 3 3£* J y 4K Q y L-gt 4m 5 4 8 2 4A 4 3 *AKQ J 5 4 48 4 47 6 Bidding went : South, 1-Spade (he’ll soon recover from his present belief in deceptive bids)'; North, 2-Diaj* monds; East, 2-Spades, showing up John’s psychie. South, 4-Hearts, ending bidding. The opening lead was the 6 of FLYER KILLED IN FLEET MANEUVERS r-’yj 1 ?t K Lieutenant and Mrc. Matthias Wyatt Lieut. He took two rounds of wtnnL s hearts, to see if an elimination pi• / might be possible, if -act. defence..’ (new name for adversary) held twj> trumps. Seeing that would not worl;, another round of trumps was take* , West let go two clubs. Two diamond tricks were taken with the finessed Q and Ace. Now South saw a pos sible squeeze, if West held the K.- 4 of clubs, but first lie had to let East: have two spade tricks, which might; help squeeze West. Dummy’s low diamond was ruffed, and East was given two spade tricks. The last four cards held by each are shown. 45 4a J 3 * K .. . *Cf 4K 0 y & 4H> § i S. vJ r> 4 7 6 Here is a simple 4-card problem. East is in the lead. He wants to hold South to winning not more than 3 of tlie remaining tricks. What must lie lead? He should see the eard3 ready for the final squeeze. He should lead his top club, then de* c-larer will lie held to 3 of the 4 re maining' tricks, having to give West a club trick. Instead of doing this be completed the squeeze for declar er, by leading his Q of spades. South ruffed. When West let go his 3 of clubs and kept his K of diamonds, dummy let go its lowest club. When declarer led his J of hearts West was hopelessly squeezed. Either way West discarded dummy was bound to win the two last trucks, givlpg Squih one overtrick r . \ 5 bride, formerly Miss Jane Now* lin, daughter of Sheriff Nowlil* of Albion, Mich.
