Seifert, manager, seated at the desk. China Bottle and Fountain Product Both Sold in the Far Eastern Republic (From the Red Barrel.) A short three years ago, seven fa miliar red barrels were placed aboard the Dollar Liner “President Pierce” at Los Angelees, and shortly thereafter bottled Coca-Cola was offered for sale in that sophisticated and vibrant me tropolis of the East—Shanghai. And during the three years that have fol lowed, hardly a Nippon Yusen Kaisha or Dollar Liner departs from Los Angeles without its cargo of red bar rels destined for the shores of Cathay. Watson’s Mineral Water Company Ltd., of Shanghai, may be called the pioneer bottler of Coca-Cola in China. Close on their heels followed Crystal Ltd., who soon had placed bottled HENDERSON, (N. C.) DAILY DISPATCH THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1935 Coca Cola in the homes, cases and clubs of Tientsin. Spurred on by their success with Coca-Cola in Tient sin. Crystal Ltd., now furnishes Coca- Cola in the city of Shanhaikwan. This year has found the Laoshan-Iltis Mineral Water Company producing and distributing bottled Coca-Cola in the “Atlantic City” of the Yellow Sea. The sales and advertising efforts of these bottlers first found response, as would he expected, in the inter national Settlements and foreign -quarters wlftere “home-side” Coca- Cola was eagerly sought after by Americans thousands of miles away from their native land, and by other nationals whose first Coca-Cola had been tasted at the outdoor cases of Paris, Rome, and in the Rhineland at Beautiful Dustseldorf. That Coca-Cola is international and is “home-side” to others than ourselves is evidenced by the amus ing experience related by Mr. T. K. Owen, manager of Watson Mineral Water Company, Shanghai. An Ita lian from the city of Rome settled in Shanghai, and noting the famous trade mark hied himself to the Shang hai plant for his case of Coca-Cola. To the delivery foreman, he express ed with native oride his satisfaction at finding Coca-Cola in Shanghai, and added that it was “the first genuine Italian product” he had found in that city. Dr. P. S. Lewis, manager of the Pacific Division, who brought this story back with him on his last trip home, did not mention whether our Italian friiend was enlightened, but we are certain that he still finds “the pause that refreshes” de lightful, whether it is Chinese, Italian or American. The almost instantaneous response from the foreign contingents in their markets has not satisfied the Chinese* bottlers of Coca-Cola, as they realize the tremendous potentialities of that vast market of natives dwelling both within and outside of the cities whose lives, customs, and beliefs are still in transients from the spiritual outlook of the old Fmnire to the republicanism, which i? fit hi turbulent.. Bulletins and pictorials with Chi nese characters line the streets, me tal signs with the trade mark both in the usual script and in Chinese characters are on the outside and hiside of dealers’ stores, and Chinese salesmen solicit the trade. Nothing is left undone to reach and develop this great market, with the ic_air that there is a steady and cons, jcsni increase in the number c. Cm nesc consumers of Coca-Cola. The famiiiar Coca-Cola trr.de nark itself in of course registered 1 China. However, the trade name “CocaOola” which is recognized by Millions everywhere as meaning a delicious and refreshing beverave, when trans cribed literally into Chinese charact ers is possible of dozens of interpre tations. It v/as therefore necessary to determine upon and register an additional trade mark with corres ponded as closely as possible phone tically to the spoken word “Coca- Cola.” This trade mark is illustrated on the photography of the metal signs accompanying this article on page 16. Reading from bottom to top and from right to left, your Chinese friend would translate it literally into “can drink, can happy,” or “some thing pleasant to drink.” The example of Chinese newspaper advertising reproduced on tlje .oppo site page . is; translat»edj^B>fpHdws: “Coca-Cola is a vary defa'cAml {drink —the favorite all over the wifnid. “Try it when you and thirsty. You will he delighted? with its refreshing and invigorating xlelici ousness. It is made from fourteen different fruits products and bottled under the most sanitary conditions. Drink it any time —it is absolutely pure. “You can get it anywhere.” Not only is the familiar bottle to he found, but in the larger towns, parti cularly in the international settle ments and cantonments, Coca-Cola is served at soda fountains. The syrup is supplied to the fountains by th§ numerous branches in China of Getz Brothers and Company. San Francis co. ‘Refreshment Time’ Is The Name Os New &s([<£ Program “Refreshment Time,” feaetujring Ray Noble and his orchestra,he the title of a new series pf Chra-Cola radio programs broadcast 'from New York over the Columbia coast-to coast network. The program will he broadcast every Wednesday night at 9:30 Eastern Time for a half-hour period each -\eek, beginning the night of October 30th. “We consider ourselves very fortu nate to have Ray Noble,” said C. O. Seifert, manager of the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Henderson, “be cause of the unusual quality of his music. Some of my associates, who have been attending rehearsals in New York, tell me that the ‘something’ in Noble’s dance music is due to the fact that he majees his arrangements bring out the real tune of a song with a certain feeling that is quick ly sensed and has not been successful ly imitated. “Although Ray Noble is compara tively a newcomer into the American world of dance music, the public has been quick to sense the plus of his , style.
