LIONS AND ROSES
SOFTBALL WINNERS
Baptists Whipped 5-4; Ki
wanians Force Rose to
11-Innings,
The "Lions bowled over the high roll
ing Baptist 5-4 and the lowly Kiwanis
forced the league leading Bose team
to four extra innings before the civic
club was defeated 14-12 in two hectic
games in softball circuit yesteiday.
The Lions won their tilt by pushing
over a tally in an extra inning with
none out.
Henry Powell handled the pitching
duties for the Lions, and did the job
well. Although he allowed eight hits,
he kept them well scattered except
for the first inning when the Baptist
scored two Os their tallies. He used
a slow “curve” and “drop” during
most of the game. Only on very rare
occasions did he turn loose his “fog”
ball.
The Kiwanians threw a real scare
into the Rose team, knot/ing the
count 11-all at the seventh inning, and
then fought their w r ay through to the
eleventh before Riose succeeded in
getting two tallies to win.
Norvel and Hamm formed the win
ning Rose battery, with Payne and
Daniels working for the Kiwanis.
Powell pitched and Royster caught
for the Lions, while Stainback pitch
ed and Hughes caught for the Eaptist.

You’re Telling Me!

By WILLIAM RITT
Central Press Writer -
Joe likes to play the ponies but
there’s a hitch to it. He can’t afford
to lose. But that doesn’t stop Joe.
Joe has worked out his own system
of picking the winning bangtails. It
has taken him five years to perfect it
but what’s five years in the interest
of science?
The system is secret but Joe is so
proud of it he has revealed all. It’s
as complicated as the solution of a
Chinese puzzle explained in an east.
African native dialect.
First of all, Joe buys all the tipster
sheets he can and after he has added
up all the selections he divides the
number by seven. To this he adds the
date, the temperature and multiplies
the total by the number of pennies
he may have in his trouser pocket.
Then he studies the weather, the
wheat crop report from the Argentine
and the Wall Street closing, bid and
asked. By this time he has narrowed
his choice down to eight horses —if
there are that many in the race.
Joe tried his system the other day
for the first time. He picked a .horse
at Saratoga. The horse won. What
made Joe mad was that he fprgot to
bet on him.
Wile Preservers
Store jars of fruit juices in
refrigerator for emergency use
in hot weather. Add a few mint
leaves, then serve juices in
chilled beverages or mix them
into desserts to be frozen. They
may be stored four or five day*
without impairment.
