A big loss of life resulted the steamer Valbanera "t Thursday off Key West, Fla. when down Everything wants to strike these days, policemen, and even ministers in some cases. We have also heard that a union has been- formed in -school to strike for shorter hours, since an extra hour has been added to the day's study. A STORY WITH A MORAL. Once upon a time there was a week ly newspaper in a town where there was no dentist. That is not peculiar in itself, to be sure. But there was no dentist. Perhaps the editor's fall ing teeth reminded him or the ad vertising qualities of white space when covered with black marks. At anv rate, he ran in his own paper and sent to certain dailies a news story about the non-existence of dentisry j his banner district in the election, re in his town and about the splendid ; turning him twelve hundred plurality, opportunities for establishing the j Jphnny O'Brien had kept his word . ,i i j i i jin i-V. tit ri r o m in in ir. tne liuie umi, luwa ui glass-stoppered phials, the wad . of cotton and the price list, cash. A dentist supply house saw the story, and remembered some of its friends who were anxious to' make changes of location. And very soon the owners of the best dental building in town had a letter from one signing D. M. D., asking for offices and saying he had shipped his goods and was com ing to stay. The people in this town may be paying for their gold crowns hap pily ever afterward, but that is not the mcral. The question is: Did h-; newspaper make any coin out or the instance? it cua. ine paper whs iue Mirror at Morton, Wash., according to the Washington Newspaper. Hay, it was, rather than coin, that tbp Morror made. The Mirror told its readers just what it had done for them without assuming to guaran tee the fillings or the bridges and then added the paragraphs belov: "First, the good a newspaper can do for its community, represented in but one of hundreds of forms in this instance .indicates that it is the duty of everyone to support his home pa per, not so much to help the news paper out as for the dollars and cents v?liie to the community itself. 'Second, it pays to aclvertisa, and the professional , or business man who does not .use printer's ink to inform the public of the merits of his wares, is missing an opportunity and there by injures himself more than the loss of his business lrjunes tue pa- per A disposition iu?.t. share of the reipon;3ibiutiea i;t . community building in tne first requi- , ' . . , , -ii v.r site of individual success, provided he j ,:. r,n prtiiated sol-dv bv selfish :no- I 1 , ..o. cciu.uea buiiy uv t-.ji i , fives. Woodrow Wilson is for the league of nations as incorporated in the treaty of peace; Henry Cabot Lodge i6 for a league of nations if the pact is written by himself. Woodrow Wil son holds that when Uncle Sam takes his seat in the council of the league of nations he shall be a high-minded gentleman; Henry Cabot Lodge in sists that when Uncle Sam becomes a member of the league he shall be a contemptible snob. Now, there is the difference between the two, and it is as wide as the East from the West, as boundless as the space between our little planet and the fixed star Arc turns. President Wilson pleads that Uncle Sam must enter the league on a pre cise equality with all the others, hav ing no more rights than any other aber and bound to perform no less duty that any other member. Joator uuuge contends that ours is .a better humanity than theirs, that we are- to accept all the benefits of the league, and shirk many of the re sponsibilities; that we claim our rights and shirk our duties. Can you imagine a better way to make our excellent old Uncle Sam the misera ble object of world contempt than the Lodge .plan? I'd just like that you tell us d that better way. HOW "T. R." Every time I introduced a reform measure in Al bany, he would say'Mr. Roosevelt, all that I am in politics is due to my keep ing my word, and I will now give you my word that I will kill jour bill,' and he did!" That speech pleased the Bowery immensely; it "got over" in the Rooseveltian way. The district was tdfe.m A PROUD RECORD.
