A., inspector-instructor for the Norti Carolina National Guard, was in Hickory Friday with Mrs. Lang don on his return to Raleigh from Asheville and took occasion to pay Co. A, First Infantry, N. C. N. G., a hign compliment. With Capt. Geo. ti. Lyerly the army officer inspected two proposed sites for a 1,000-yard rifle range, and Captain Langdon said the prospects were good for Hickory's se curing a model range. Captain Langdon said that the Hickory company was rated very high by the state and federal author ities, that the local armory was among the best in the state, and that the support given the company was highly appreciated by the military authorities in Raleigh and Washing ton. He said the people of Hickory had a right to be proud of their mil itary company. A. Whitener of Hickory, attorney for the board, is drawing up a iormai protest to be filed with the state tax commission. The increase ordered by the state commission was 15 per cent, Catawba being among several coun- p ties which was thus dealt with by.gj the state authorities.
