THEN AND NOW Without reference to history, we cannot recall the leaders and dates of the French revolution, but we are re minded of some of those early strug gles by the onslaught of the French in the Champagne region. The re treat of the French armies before the (Germans the first few weeks of the present war was somewhat like the retreats of the French before the Prussians and Austrians about 1790, except that a year ago the French maintained their formations and were ready with a counter attack the mo ment the opportunity arrived. That was the battle of the Marne. A few years before Napoleon stepped into the center of activities, and while the directorate was run ning things in France, several coun tries decided that France must have a king. That was because these other countries had kings, and so several thousand men were sent over to Fiance to place another Bourbon on :ho throne. The French armies were xmipcsed largely of Parisians and -ifl'rair, ran at the sight of an Aus trian bayonet and in several instances mutinied and murdered their comman ders. At Valmy a name which has ap peared in print several times during the last year the French surprised ihemselves, and turned back a crack Austrian division. The Prussian guards then charged up the hill, only to be routed by the artillery. It was on this hill that the French found themselves, and were ready to be turn ed into the best soldiers in the world " few years later. If Napoleon had been content merely to defend France, instead of attempting to conquer the world, England, Prussia, Italy, Spain and all the rest never would have been able to defeat him. He wasted half a million troops In Italy, Russia and Egypt. In extending her lines of defense in Russia and France, Germany may be following the footsteps of Napoleon. All the world could not crush Ger many if her lines were short and her soldiers properly intrenched. But even the Germans cannot sustain the unequal contest any more than the greatest of all military geniuses could sustain it a hundred years earlier. HAS PROVED SUCCESS. Dollar Day as an institution has proved it3 worth and is being con ducted successfully in many cities. The first big success was in Richmond several years ago and since that time every live town has been making friends with it. Charlotte has con ducted two such extraordinary value sales and High Point recently pulled off one to the entire satisafction of nil concerned, according to Mr. C. C. Prince, secretary of the merchants as sociation of that town. The Charlotte News, noting that Hickory will have a Dollar Day next Thursday, observes: Hickory is planning a "Dollar Day" some time during October. The success ot "Dollar Day" in Charlotte upon two occasions has been subject to much tress comment and we note that other progressive merchants of the state in other towns besides Hickory are planning to try out the scheme. Dollar Day will be given a trial here under favorable conditions. ThA wido-awake merchants are cooperating in every way, they are advertising liberally and they will see to it that practically every person in this whole section is acquainted with the unusual values to be offered. The Record is confident the event will be a success. Everybody in Catawba and adjoin ing counties should make a special ef fort to get hold of Monday's Record. WILL RECEIVE WELCOME. The Record extends a hor-t come to Rev. W. E. Murray and family who arrived in the city yesterday to make Hickory their home. Mr. Mur ray will have charge of Holy Trinity Lutheran church, and will lead a con gregation of earnest men and women. This is a f?cod church in a rmr,t l- - bv"u WH1 munity and, although pastorless since the death of Rev. Mr. Wannemacher, has been active in good works, and un der the cuidance of Mr. Miwov ;n - J ill increase its usefulness in the community. It dosen't make any difference whether you have been picked as a winner or not, just so you keep dig ging. The Philadelphia Nationals were doped to end the season a few points ahead of Cincinnati or St. Louis, but the fellows took a running start, held on with all their might, and are just as likely as not to win the world's series if Alexander the Great is able to deliver. It usually is get up and get that wins in baseball or any thing else. The building and loan associations are agencies for the upbuilding of a community second to no others. Any thing that teaches thrift is a good thing, and the building and loan was formed for that purpose. Anybody who has money can buy a home, but the building and loan as sociation enables one to save money or to buy a home on easy terms. I I & s; The osprey, we learn from the Asheville Gazette News, is a bird that builds her nest in the same place year after year, never changing it and always doing it like other ospreys have done for several hundred years. The result is that the osprey hasn't got anywhere and never will. We imagine that the osprey resembles some mer chants, but not any merchants in Hickory. Mr. P. B. Suit, after making a long sojourn in Hickory, has gone to Jack sonville, Fla., for a short season. The fact that the Grand Army of the Republic, comprising between 20, 000 and 30,000 veterans of the War Between Lhe States, has endorsed President Wilson's foreign policy, ought to be proof that the professor is onto his job. The Washington ad ministration might be open to criti cism in other matters, but its foreign policy has met with almost universal approval. It must be rather difficult to raise a fuss over taxes with cotton selling at twelve cents and most of the smoke houses and granaries giving their possessors the sort of feeling that nothing can harm. All of us would like to keep from paying taxes, but the great majority of us want to see the old state continue going forward. Editor Britton of the News and Ob server is turning out puns at the rate of a dozen a day, and what is more, some of them are unusually clever. V. We don't know whether they have many mosquitoes in Raleigh now, but we'll wager they won't be any there about December 15. The Charlotte News concedes that the corporation commission, in increas ing the assessments in Mecklenburg county to a level with those in adjoin ing counties, A number of farmers were caught with their hay down, but the majority must have got the hay safely stacked before the rain. In a few days farm ers will be busy picking cotton or digging sweet potatoes, and here's hoping they will have the right sort of weather. Long distance wireless communica tion between Arlington and Mare Island, a distance of 2,500 miles, is enough to make one marvel at the ac complishment of science, but it dosen't. The fact is, one is not surprised any longer at any thing. The Record has never claimed that it uses as much Associated Press matter as some of the other papers, but it is acted with very little I convinced that after one reads this wisdom. And yet the News several years ago was earnestly striving to have some of those magnificent build ings in Charlotte assessed at some thing like half their value. paper, he has read all the important news of the day. State Fair this year. The next stop is Caldwell County Fair, which promises to be unusually good. They have something to show up that way too. Slight Mistake. In Kansas City they tell of a broker who moved from the city out into the country. He went out some distance oiri cinco tho r-ailwav was poverty- stricken and the service consequently poor, he traveled to nd from town by automobile. After a time, he decided to go m for chicken raising, and ordered a patent chicken coop. On the day it was expected to arrive he set out m a dray to fetch it from the freight office. He reached the railway station, which, by the way, he had never seen, after an hour's drive. No one was in sight, but there was his chicken coop. With his man's as sistance he soon had it on the dray, and set off for home. He had pro ceeded but a few rods, when he en countered a man in uniform, with the title "Station Master" on his cap. "What have you got on that dray?" demanded the station master, excited ly. "My new chicken coop." "Chicken coop nothing! You're car rying off Blankville Junction." De troit Free Press.
