ASSO 1 ATEIH'RESS KKPORTS., IM.'OTECHON IS WANTED the nresident an m- Utst u i' circulate reports lhat he soon will order the withdrawal of Am..i'ii:m t ru.in.-t from Mexico. for iiir4lv Mr. Wilson does not eontem plate sin h !i course in the presene of a continual menace to the horde state t. If the ahiin':ton govern merit had any assurance that Carran y.u ci uld protect the border, if Car arn.n were even willing to lend hand in putting down the bandit band then- would be some reason for hop ing that the wir department coul .lixiuino w:th the troop in Mexico- and on the border. The de facto government, ho a ever, is unable to f lllli'l lull. 1 the conditions are no better today than they were a wet or a month ago. The American people, we believe hud made Lin their minds that law jiful nnlo. had to be restored in Mex ico; they are prepared Tor We !, rifice. if it has to be made, and they want ihe job completed as soon a possible. They don t want halt-way possible. They don't want any half-way will not .velcome another Vera Cruz incident. The American people do not want to make war on Mexico or any othc country, but they do want protection for Americans who ilve in horde states. If President Wlson can ol tain this without using tlK army any longer, the whole country will be gratified, but the thing needed ju now is assurance that the army an. national guardsmen will not be cailec upon for duty and then returned home and called upon again. The appointment of Francis D. Win ston to the judgeship tto succeed the late Judge R. B. Peebles was a happy selection. There is no man in the state more versatile than the former lieutenant governor, none wno is moit congenial, and none who has more warm friendship. To know ranK Winston is to like him. That he is a finished lawyer there is not the slightest doubt and that he will make an excellent judge his past record is proof. Baseball Summary r The (ireensboro News says that Jim Kelly's Goats won 14 games dur ing the first half, and it looks like tln-v will better their record during the second period. The Germans evidently want to as sist God in "strafing England," judg- iiu- bv their blows on the English lines. This Fourth of July was as quiet as Durham or Raleigh after the home team has lost a ball game. Wouldn't Walter Johnson be a val n.1,1 nu iiiit for a hand urenade con tingent? And mavbe the Russians will break the camel's back. CONSEIIYING THE RACE Naturally everybody takes great pride in fine cows, horses and hogs regardless of their owners, but few people consider it worth while to trouble themeselves about the condi lions that surround a family here or elsewhere. Conservation of the hum an family is a subject that interests but a small part of the people. A case like that reported near tonover the other day should never be allowed to occur in a state where we are taught to believe that we are our brother's keeper. Probably it occur twenty-live years but it should be prevented could not from now now. It is not enough that children of the shiftless or feeble minded shall be provided for by the state or some charitable organization. Children should be denied those who are notor iously weak mentally or physically, or who have committed offenses that would bring reproach on their pos terity. It is a crime against the chil dren of unfortunates in many cases and a leaser crime against society. North Carolina will tackle the prob lem some of these days of preventing feeble-minded and criminal from sin ning against future generations, and that will be better than establishing homes for defectives. MAY PUNISH LYNCHERS Very quietly Solicitor Shaw went about the tedious business of endeav oring to "work up evidence against the men who lynched Joe Mack, an old negro man whose offense was that he tried to assist his son to escape, Judge W. M. Bond, who is a conser vative, happens to believe that the constitution was adopted to safeguard the rights of the people and that the ' courts were created to uphold the laws,' and punish evil-doers, and will stand by the solicitor. j The lynching of this negro man by a Greene county mob followed shortly on the heels of a lynching! at Goldsboro and gave the state a1 further shock. j Public sentiment all over the state is for law enforcement anil against j mob violence, with the exception ot the communities in which the crimes occur, but a wholesome application of prison terms will change the view-, point of lynchers even in Greene coun ty. We hope Solicitor Shaw will not lose his nerve; we are positive Judge Bond will stand by the state in this affair. . PRESS COMMENT No Town Rivalry In It. Carolina. Asheville, o-L'; Charlotte, 0-3. They're having a sort of epidemic of law enforcement in Catawba and we gain the impression from the Ca tawba papers that it is partially due to a sort of rivarly between the coun ty court at Newton and the record er's court at Hickory, or rather to the feeling of citizens of the two towns Some citizens of Hickory were arrest ed and fined in the county court at Newton for infractions of the auto mobile speed laws, Mayor Whitener of Hickory being a victim. Thereup io the solicitor of the county court at Newton, Mr. Jesse Sigmon, was in die ted in the recorder's court at Hick ory for running an automobile with out a proper number. He plead guilty -Mid was fined $5. While the motives behind these prosecutions may or may not be commendable, the citizenship eenerally will, we take it, encourgae the good work. Officials charged with the enforcement of the law should be made to take their medi cine along with the common herd when they fail to observe the regula tions they are charged with enforcing on others. Capt. Morey's account of the Carri zal fight should end one illusion which seems to be widely held, even in military circles. The American commander at that skirmish "was under the impression that the Mexi cans would run as soon as we fired." They did not run, and they cannot be trusted to run on other occasions, until persuaded by hot, well directed fire or the close approach of an un wavering line of bayonets. There are no Mexican soldiers like those who are mauling each other at Verdun and may heaven be thanked for that mercy! but Carranza has troops plenty good to give our little army a warm reception. That our men will win is fore doomed, and the sooner they start the sooner the task will be finished. It i. said to be the universal feeling in Washington that there will be war within a week". Why we hould wait a week or an hour, un less for some reason which has not I been made public, the Journal fails to see; but a few days more or less will not change the situation. We were slow about going into Cuba, too, but we did a thorough piece of work when we started. A SHINGLE PHONOGRAPH A phonograph recently constructe by a high school boy, and described ;n the Popular Science Monthly, has is its reproducing part nothing more pretentious than an ordinary single with the point of a darning needle -securing fastened in one corner, steel knitting needle, clamped in laboratory ring-stand, is thrus through a hole in the shingle to sup port it as it as it is carried over the record. The record is mounted upon a wooden turn-tame constructed as follows: A disk is made of three Miiarter-mch wood, with a groove in the edge, mounted on the hub am ixle of an old bicycle wheel, so that ;t can turn easily. This is connected with an ordinary battery motor by means of a cord belt. Pressure of the thumb and finger on the shaft of the motor regulates the speed of the disk. Records can be played back ward simply by twisting the belt THE DEI) GO DEVIL !ulletin of the National Tax Asso. The Colorado tax commission had ordered Mr. Cartwright, the asses- or ot utero county .to increase the valuation on all motorcycles by fifty per cent. This action brought speedy response from a Japanese resident of the county, as follows: "Horn tex ctmmision and Hon omision bord and kartrite: Gents: his respectify to say that mi go evil motorcickle is maid too much in axe ritin receev from you. Trade fur it " years lonir with 2 hog. they d, it now ded, run thrue sticky fence in ditch, no koff, no go. You Pon heu kum take him. no pay so dam much as Hon comision say in ritin on ded go devil. Dr. Max llerz, well known Vienna scientist, has in vented a sort of combination of talk in x machine and telegraph which will enable the blind to "read" with far greater ease than the present cum bersomu and costly Braile books. The principle of the new device lies in the conveying of "Morse" or other telegraphic signs, to the blind through the sense of hei-rirg. On the ma chine are placed sma'l records, each ofwhich may contain a whole story written out in cod?. To produce these records a further instrument composed of two Morse keys and electric sounders, is re quired; the sounders being connected with a needle which cuts into the pre pared wax record. The records con sist only of long and short sounds low prices. It is proposed through this medium and they can be sold at extraordinary to issue a daily newspaper for the blind. ADVANCE NOTICE Exchange. Little W illie came to his mother with the following query: "Mother, what would you do if some one broke the large vase in the parlor?" "I would whip him," responded mother.
