SEPTEMBER 9, 1916 PEOPLE ARE TIRED If the Bremen does not arrive, the Germans might change the name of the Deutschland in order not to dis nnnnin t the thousands who would rtr- welcome the long-promised subma rine. It further constitutes a moral defeat of wh'ch the reaction is at th.s mo ment felt so seriously in the Bal kans. Those who have read North Caro lina history painstakingly know that southern people, while they held on grimly, did not believe that the south ern states, under the ablest of gen erals, and displaying a bravery equal to any that is shown in Europe, could win against the overwhelming resources Of the union. Victory was simply impossible. And yet the southern states, after two years of war, were in better position to fight on probably than the central empires, the lesser - of which has been made groggy by the hard blows of Russia and Italy. Wonder how many more stix.jjr men wfjl have tjo pay the price before the German general staff is willing to quit? expose them. Mr. Hugh M. Miiler, advertising manager of the Record is one of the few newspaper men in North Carolina that can boast a good automobile. There are less than a dozen newspa per barons in North Carolina, to the reporter's knowledge or to the best of his belief and some of these cars are not Cadillacs, Packards and the like. Mr. Miller's is a Buick, made in this decade, retrimjned and fitted up like a fighting chicken. The Jerome Bolick Cons Company of Conover did the overhauling, and made a good job of it. TONSILS OPERATION BLAMED New York Wiorldr-' The Dresent epidemic of infantile paralysis is probably due in a con siderable deeree to the cuttiner out of children's tonsils, which has been going on in New York for a decade, savs Dr. Max Tamley, surgepn to the Harlem eye, ear and throat In firmary. The shock of this operation breaks down children's nerves and predis poses them to the paralysis, he as serts. "The campaign to exterminate the tonsils, started 10 or 12 years ago, he says in the New York Medical Journal, ''has been carried on relent lessly ever since. The "fear and anxiety," he says extends for months before the opera tion and the pain, due in many cases to bunfirlinfir surgery, VstU months afterward. IThere is another danger, due to the removal of the tonsils, Dr. Talmey states. That is the elimination from the system of a valuable protective substance, the nature of which is un known. "This substance," he adds, "may either be directly contained in the sonsils or else produced from the blood or other orerans by the mere presence in the body of the tonsils The latter may act in the manner of ferments, so that even minute quan- tit'es of their tissue suffice to keep ud the continued production of this valuable protective substance." Dr. Talmey says he has called his theory to the attention of the health department and has received assur ances that an inquiry will be made ) ANNOUNCEMENT 'Mrs. J. B. A WORKING CONGRESS THE COCA-COLA CO. ATLANTA, GA. Congress came near spending 000.000,000 whatever that is during the session that closed Friday, but there are many things to show for it. Chief of the constructive acts was the federal reserve act, and next was the good roads law, which will assist states in building proper highways. The pre paredness legislation, which the public desired, amounted to more than a billion dollars, and that may be worth ten times what it cost one of these days. If the navy and army and coast defenses- are not needed, nobody will be hurt. It was a remarkable session, and President Wilson kept the members busy all the time. But for Mr. Wlilson's firmness and judgment, both the senate and the house would have made monkeys of themselves during the controversy with Germany. They wanted to sur render more American rights as if this country had not yielded enough to all the belligerents, but the president wh pped them Into line. For fellows who are as much intent on holding their jobs as on serving their country, members of congress, both Democrats and Republicans, acted fairly well. The Democrats propos ed for the most part and the Re publicans opposed, also for the most part. If congress had done nothing save pass the currency law, the public would have no right to criticise it. And yet a dozen salutary laws were placed on the books.
