ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1916 THE VOLUNTEERS Hickory people undoubtedly are in the Volunteers of Ameri v-oniTation similar to the VH, win""'""" c.iu.'nn Armv. but differeing from that organization in that all funds collected at each local post are ap nlied to the needs of the community retain Cov and his associates have rented a 10-room residence and are fitting it up as a home for the unfor tunatc. This home wilt be dedicat cd Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The Record is endorsing the Vorun teers because it believes the best peo nle of the city are back of them; be causo it too brieves that they will do us good. If wo want Captain Coy ana his assoc'a'es to remain in Hickory, we will have to help them. The more wo help them, the better work they will be able to do. If w do not care to have them doing religious tin A TVlfflPf ffi rk in Hickory. we should say so. But Hickory docs want them, and the Record hopes that the various Sunday schools will take it upon themselves to make a special effort to assist in the work. A 1 ttle here aad there will be sufficient. All of us addincr our mite will enable the Volunteers to perform real service here. The Record has been interested only in good service and low rates for the public, but it nonethless commends (the judgment of city council in award ing the franchise to a corporation that has the ability to grow ahead of the town. KIFFEN ROCKWELL In g'v'ng h's life for the cause of France, Kiffen Rockwell, who joined tho French army from North Caro lina, has not died in vain. He has paid back to the French people a part of the debt w owe to LaFayette and other heroes who strove for Amerl can independence. Rockwell Is not the only American youth who has responded to the call of France. Bteuthernral and Thurman, southern football stars, are today rendering great aid to the republic across the Atlantic. Rockwell's fame will not die. As great as will be the grief of his moth er in Winston-Salem, she has the con soling thought the her son died fight ing for the right. What better end could have come to this bold youth ? Americans of all shades love or ad mire France. To her the most sym pathy is extended in, her great trial, for hor most prayers are offered. If Rockwell has caused the flame of pa triotism to burn brighter among the French, if his death has rekindled In the American people the warmth they hero always felt for their friend across the sea, then he is a martyr. Ho is not dead; he cannot die. SECOND DOLLAR DAY Thursday, October 12, will be anoth er memorable day in the life of Hick ory and this section of the state and will result in emphasizing Hickory as tho preeminent shopping center ' of this locality. Every merchant in Hick ory will cooperate in putting on spec ial values for this day, and thousands of people here and in this entire sec tion will be on hand. Hundreds were here last year, in spite of a dismal rain that was calculated to keep one indoors. Hickory merchants and the peo ple of this sect'on already are close together. They are warm and prov ed friends. There is sympathy be tween them. We will all join together to make Dollar Day not only profitable to our selves and the merchants, but to de monstrate once more that we can pull off any stunt that any town can pull off and a little bit better, at that. NOW FOR A STADIUM Dr. Hubert A. Royster of Raleigh one of the state's best known nhvsl cians, has inaugurated a campaign for a suitable athletic park at Wake For est College, of which he is an alum nus. Those who have seen the play ing field at the Baptist institution and who have given, any consideration to sports readily have realized the need and the movement begun by Dr. Royster ought to result in giving the young men who attend the Baptist college a stadium adequate to their needs. The Record trusts that the We haven't heard a political speech this year, though we did hear a part of that made by Walter Murphy. We d'd expect to hear Mr. Linney, but had something else more important on hand. friends of this institution will rally the cause. We cannot expect con ventions and conferences and synods fi take keen interest in athletics, but they will not object to having friends of all denominations unite in a wormy work. The Record wants Dr. Roys ter' plan to mature, and is willing to aid in any way it can. Dr. Edward Mims of Vanderbilt TTnivM-aitv will deliver the address at the University of North Carolina on October 12, a day on which loyal Tar Heels ought to offer up thanks- pivines for the wisdom of the men who 122 years ago must have had a vision of what the university would mean to a great state. i IT 7, Z xt.,. Every institution with 500 or more students should not allow freshmen air! athletes from oth er colleges to play .he first year. Tho whole community will watch with interest today the fine work be-' ing dono by the Baracas and Phi !atheas of the Methodist' Sunday school in building two class rooms and a library. Paris, Sept. 26 The serv'ces in the Greek church in the Rue Georges Bizet were interrupted by a Greek student who interposed an objection to the congregation praying for the King and Royal famiiy of Greece. At the end of the ceremony the student rushed into the pulpit and began to harangue the congregation. This led to fistcuffs inside the edi fice, which later were resumed out s de the church, where the congrega tion 1 stened to speeches expressing gratitude to France, and then dispers ed, cheering for France and Greece. BAD COLDS FROM LITTLE SNEEZES GROW Many colds that hang on all win ter start with a sneeze, a sniffle, a sore throat, a tight chest.
