Little Serbia, beset by Aus tria, offered to surrender all except w sovereignty, and if the great powers had. deckled that she lose that, the Serbs would have yielded. But Austria was insistent, and there vu no one at Berlin to say Austria nay. Mobilization began in Austria. Russ a followed suit, ultimatums were ?ctK, tho British and French minis ters strove desperately, aided by Italy, to have a conference, but the war party in Berlin refused. Be'gium, who had no part in the quarrel, was oblivious of the danger in store for her. Luxemburg was in vaded, Prussian soldiers crossed in to Belcr'um. encountered the forts at Liege were met as an honorable na wlin should meet an invader, and were delayed several days. It was impossible then to destroy France. Belgium pa d the price. She lost practically all save honor. But the entente allies have said that they will never stop fighting until Belgium is reconquered, and indemniy col lected and the wrong done that brave people mended as far as possible. The world ought not to forget Bel gium. All of them have bad colds. First t was reported that Governor Bick ett was affected by throat trouble, then came the report that Mr. Linney was suffering from it, later that Wal ter Murphy was eating lozenges by the pound, and now Cameron Mor rison, who can talk as much and as hard as any man in the state, has discovered that his throat is not made of brass. Openair speaking The British blacklist is a whitelist, according to Sir Richard Crawford, but to those Americans with German names the color makes no difference. Bandit Villa may attack Carranza troops with impunity, but if he copies Pershing's way not much importance will be attached to his hide. Redding pitched remar kable ball for the losers but received poor support in two inn ngs. All of Charlotte's three hits were to the infie'd and came in succession in the eighth inning. Boston on paper has no betier team thar Chicago or Detroit, but the Red Sox, when they faced the crucial test, al way came through with the punch. Minus Speaker the Red Sox have had a hard time of it, but they refused to be counted out. The lesson to be learned in their wonderful fight can bo applied in business as well as in sport never concede defeat as long as there is life. He who continues to fight wh'le others are counting h;m out will reach the goal sooner or later. EVERYBODY FOR ROADS A few years ago it seemed that it would be many a day before the coun try would have good road-, but prog ress in the last few months indicates that the worth of properly built high ways has appealed to people every where. Wilkes county perhaps fur nished the most notable example Wilkes was devastated by the flood, and yet before tho land had scarcely dried, the voters had dee ded to tax themselves to the extent of $250,000 for roads. Wiikes has made remar kable progress in the past ten years, and there is no reason why it should not become one of tho most prosper ous count es in the entire state. FOR THE COMMUNITY These who know Mr. G. H. Geit ner do not need to be told that he would not de'ay the Horseford bridge because of personal interests,, and his explanation yesterday will suffice to clear up Pome confusion in some parts of Caldwell county. Mr. Geitner cannot control busy steei plants, he cannot prevent railroads from losing shipments, and he cannot make bricks without straws. This section is indeed indebted to him for erecting ferries, and he did not mind if he lost money on the project. He wanted to help the community. There is no fundamental difference between the two great political par ties nationally, so far as we are able to observe. The only question that seemed to divide them was the tariff, but the creation of a tariff board will result in removing it from the realm of pontics, and then the two parties will be placed before the country on their merits. .n"nnnnnBnnp -wmmmnmm mi w W lii:$ A H vJlMJ A I mmJ A NUFORM REDUSO AVERAGE FICUBES STOUTFIOOHem R W.B.Nuform Corsets give Style, Comfort and perfectly fitting Gown.
