In no previous stage of the history of the United States has the great game been so trickily played by every pro tected interest which is opposed to the intersts of the common people. Such widely distant and d verse is sues as the peace of Europe and re ligion in Mexico have been added as trumps to such cards as the war be tween railway magnates and brother hoods, suffrage, prohibition, prepar edness, prosperity and platitudes. These are all carefully stirred to gether by adroit campaign speakers, and then handed on to the consider ation of the intelligent voters. Evidently, the intelligence of the average citizen is at least actually on trial. Certainly it has never before been put face to face with so hard a test. To see through the cloud of for eign affairs and the smoke and fog of domestic differences will prove a triumph of sanity for the average voter. Shipbuilding in the South Florida Metropolis. The launching of a 2,000-ton steamship from a Tampa shipyard marks an epoch in Florida, in fact, the extreme southeast. The south is coming into its own in more ways than one. It is steadily learning that it can do the things which were re garded as impracticable not so long ago. For years it was the belief 'chat it would be impossible to con struct a large steel vessel on the South Atlantic or East Gulf coasts because of the distance from iron and steel mills and machine builders. Jasksonville and Tampa have dis proved this theory. Jacksonville will be the building point of a 2,000 ton freighter at once. The Merrill Stevens company this week lays the keel for a big steel freighter; already a number of smaller steamers have been built. A number of large barges are now under course of construction.
