When the band begins to play next Tuesday morning at the opening of Gaston county's an nual fair, which will be on for five days, October 3rd to 7th, inclusive, ev erything will be in readiness from the smallest exhibit up to the magnifi cent and brilliant midway. Secretary, Holland has a big force of hands atj work erecting the big tents which j will house some of the exhibits, while) a large force of carpenters is wind ing up ths work on additinonal buil dings for livestock, pigs, etc. Anoth er large force has been busy in the office for days past sending out lit erature relative to the fair and list ing entries. Indications aif now that the cfclhibits of livestock and pigs will be the largest ever got ten together in one place in this sec tion of the country. The interest be ing manifested by the stock raisers and farmers in general is far beyond the most sanguine expectatiins of the management a month ago. The poultry exhibit is also expected to be exceptionally fine as will be those of the canning clubs, the home de monstration clubs and other organi zations. Under an immense tent, 60 by 270 feet, will be housed ex hibits by local merchants and man ufacturers which will surpass both in magnitude and varied attractive ness that of last year. So much by way of calling the at tention of thoughtful voters to a few facts that should be considered in this connection: In 1891, when the corporation com mission was organized, the property of the railroads and other public ser vice corporations in the state, was assessed for taxation at $12,321,704. The corporation commission last year assessed this property at $141,359,299 an increase over 1891 (24 years) of 1,047 per cent. In 1891 land was valued for tax ation in North Carolina at $155,079, 648. Last year this same land was valued at $419,910,289 an increase over 1891 of 170 per cent. i In the 24 years, therefore, the corporation commission increased the assessment of the railroads and other public service corporations, 1, 047 per cent., while the land assess-1 ment has been increased only 170 per cent. Refl'e.V on these figures a little while and then ask yourself if the average "landowner has cause to com plain of his assessment. The num ber of public service corporations has increased and the value of their holdings has increased in the 24 years, and so far as we know their assessments are not unreasonable.
