in all safety, however, that the plans
outlined will dovetail with the mil!
tary plans oft he allies; territorial
considerations will come later. Since
the Balkan theatre affords the best
possible chance for a decision before
spring,' it is quite likely that the Ru
manians will attempt to hold their
lines against Austria with a small
force and send the larger army
through Bulgaria, hoping thereby to
connect with the entente forces op
erating from Saloniki and the Adri
atic. Such a campaign would give more
promise of decisive results, and per
sons who are following the military
campaigns in the various theatres wilj
watch Rumania with keen interest.

VASON FOUND GUILTY
Atlanta. Ga . Oct 16. G. K. Va
son, doorkeeper of the Georgia house-
of representatives who was convicted
of stabbing Thomas B. Felder, an At-!
lanta lawyer, was given the maximum .
sentence by Judge Hen 11 ill in superior
court. He was sentenced to serve
one year on the chaingang, six
months in jail and fined $1,000. I
Vason was tried on a charge of
assault with intent to murder, a
felony, but the jury brought in a
verdict that Vason was guilty of
s'fabb'ng, a misdemeanor. Judge Hill
in passing sentence stated that the

extent and that it did not remain
for the judge to give a light sentence, j
Felder was stabbed during a fight .
with Vason in a local hotel August
3 and was badly wounded.
It sems to be a fact that the good
women are desired at political speak
ings, and yet we daresay the men who
invite them could give very strong
personal reason why the women
should not vote.
Raleigh cotton sold for 17 1-16 one
day last week, the highest in 40 years,
and on the same day Alex Shuford
paid 171 1-4 here. Which is another
proof that Hickory is the best place
to sell.

Interest in fairs from time imme
morial always has been great. Our
ancestors used to gather at certain pe
riods of the year at the market places
and trade their pigs and chickens for
articles they needed. By degrees the
idea of the county and state fairs, as
we know them, was evolved, until to-1
day the fair is a place where the'

social feature, which was always the'

allowed to lag, while the nature of
fairs has changed. A fair is not pri
