A Salisbury merchant carried four
pages one day recently in the Salis
bury Post, and a Greensboro concern
lately carried eight pages in the
Greensboro Record The Concord
Tribune says it frequently has run
four pages for one big store in its
town. The Hickory Record has
printed several page advertisements,
most of them by one dry goods firm.
All of these advertisements were
to the point. Most North Carolina
merchants are taking advantage of
their opportunities and as a result
the newspapers are crowded with
good ads. The day when a business
can grow of itself has passed and
those merchants who are doing like
their grandfathers did are slowly los
ing ground,

farmers who devote much land to

Burke county people are enthusi
astic over the prospects of good
roads and they are counting on as fine
a system of highways as any section
of North Carolina, according to Mr.
W. A. Self, who has been in Burke
for several days on a contested elec
tion case. Icard and Lovelady town
ships led the procession and three oth
er townships west of these followed
suit. Burke folks are not going te
have Hickory people saying that they
are in the mud when they leave Ca
tawba, Mr. Self was told.
