WOMEN IN WAR
Although we are accustomed to
think of women as belonging to the
home, the fact is that 3.21U.000 wom
en are employed outside their own
homes in the British Isles. This rally
ing of the women to the cause of the
empire in wartime will make it diffi
cult for parliament to deny them the
right to vote, it is declared. During
the first two years the Associated
Press informs us, the increase of
women workers in the British Isles
was SCG.OOO, and of these 76G.000 di
rectly replaced male labor.
A note from Rev. C. L. Crane the
other day told of women waitresses
and street car operatives in Bordeaux,
France. It is the same way in every
part of the republic, and in the Ger
man empire the women workers are
many.
Throughout Europe the women are
doing as effective work as the men.
In a war like that raging abroad the
whole resources of the countries ars
drawn on, and if the men give most ii
is because they are sent to the firing
line and not because of the unwill
ingness of the women to share the
dangers of the first line.
RUMANIAN JEWS HOPE

some twenty miles south of here. No
central power officer was within

mushrooms ts they could carry.
Notwithstanding, this superabuiy
dance of the plants has not tended in
tl.2 slightest to keep the retail prico
down. Today mushrooms sell at re
tail from 110 to 125 pfenings abroad.

Tho Record takes pleasure in call
ing the attention of its readers to the
article of Rev. J. G. Garth on the
Volunteers of America. Mr. Garth
and others have investigated the Vol
unteers and have found them wor
thy. The point is. not that these peo
p'e do good work, for that is ad
mitted, but whnt are we going to do
to aid them? Only a few days ago
Chief Lentz carried Captain Coy to
a house in Hickory, where a sick moth
. er and six small children were oc
cupying one squalid room. They need
clothing, bed clothing, food and a
stove. Captain Coy will reach peo
ple that never see. the inside of a
church and the Volunteers will do
good work here if they are helped.
iSince the railroads formerly con
trolled most of the legislation affect
ing them, they should not be surprised
because the pendulum swung. As a
matter of fact, the people today are
ready to give the railroads a fair
show and there is not that hostility
to them that was prevalent a few
days ago.
Colonel Roosevelt is being spoken
of as the Republican candidate for
president in 1920 and while we don't
believe he will be nominated we are
confident he was the party's one best
bet in 1916, but the leaders wouldn't
have him.
William J. Bryan is to visit Raleigh
December 4 and the Chamber of Com
merce will give him a banquet. Mr.
Bryan is partial to North Carolina,
largely because of Secretary Daniels.
It looks as if Rumania is going the
way of Belgium and Serbia, but things
have looked bad before and then
turned out better.

LIVES NEAR BRUSSELS

Amterdam, Netherlands, The Tel-
egraaf's frontier correspondent learns
that Empress Charlotte, widow ot
Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, still
resides at the castle ot Jboischou.t,
near Brussels. The castle and the
park have not besn to ached by the
Germans and soldiers are forbidden
to enter the grounds. The Empress
has never been informed of the war
but often asks why King Albert and
Queen Elizbeth do not visit her any
more.
The Empress Charlotte has been
suffering from insanity for many
years.

Paris, Nov. 25. A French army
avitor, Captain G , when not dir
ecting the squadron he commands,
gives his attention to the ways of
certain birds in the air.
(He has observed that swallows
when migrating fly at an elevation of
about 800 yards, while wild ducks,
at a similar period, fly as high as
2 000 yards. The green-necked spe
cies, he roted, flew at about 85 miles
an hour when mounting and about 95
miles when in horizontal flight. Lap
wings were seen by the aviator at
over a mile and a half high.
