New Enterprise for State Wilmington Star. It i3 announced mat wum win gin in a few weeks on a half million dollar manufacturing plant, to be lo cated just outside the incorporate limits of the town of Brevard, Tran sylvania county. That is way up in the mountains, but the whole of North Carolina is on the eve of a wonder- S' state, treasury, war or navy. Thereis already somespeculation as to whom Democrats may nom inate in 1920. Mr. Wilson, under the; two-term precedent being no longer j eligible, and Secretary Lane, being : a Calif ornian, would assuredly be in line for the nomination, but for, one j impediment for which he is no , way j responsible, and which, under , the conditions, is to be regretted. This announcement is made by Mr. Joseph S. Silverstein, who is associated with northern and .vtirn capitalists in the project. The enterprise is nothing less than a large j Springfield Republican. it is to be hoped he will be kept in the public service. JOHNSON AND HUGHES PUBLICATION OFFICE: 1402 ELEVENTH AVENUE Entered as second class matter Sep tember 11, 1915, at the PotoAVee at Hickory, N. C, under the act of March 3, my. i tnnnprv. The tannery is coming where c aantities, and. of course, it is de pending upon the increased interest i n .Charges are circulating in Repub lican ranks that Hiram Johnson "sold out" Hughes. It is said that Hughes ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS MONDAY, NOV. 27, 1916 THEY CAN DO IT Every man and woman in Hickory should have read the report of Mrs. Worth Elliott and Miss Lillian Field on the library meeting in Charlotte. Naturally delegates from other towns in the state, some of them not as large or as thriving as Hickory, were surprised to learn that this city has practically no library in comparison with other places in the state. Hick ory delegates had to report that there was little general interest in the li brary and that there was no Woman's Club here to take the initiative. If the good women of Hickory would take it upon themselves to or ganize by 1917 and to work for a library building and adequate sup port they would succeed before the end of next year. Then they could point to the first year's work, which would be a monument to their ef forts, and set another goal to aim at. The good women could easily enlist every agency in Hickory in the cause. This is the week, for most of the book clubs to meet. Suppose the library matter were brought up and suppose each club were to appoint a committee to work with other clubs. And suppose the bridge clubs cooper ate. It would mean that Hickory will have a real library. Here is an opportunity for persons who, if they had ten million dollars, admit they would donate a free library to Hick ory here is an opportunity for them to give it to Hickory regardless. A GOOD EXAMPLE Under the caption of "Too Much Wilson," the Lincoln Times prints an article from Helena, Mont. : which says that Rev. Francis von Clafen bock has sent his resignation papers and a letter returning his naturaliza tion papers to the district court at IleJena. Wilson's administration was 'too much" for this man. who re nounced his citizenship. j We haven't any unkind words for tho Rev. von Clafenback. He dosen't like a republic like ours and, unlike thousands of others who have come to this country to escape tyranny, he simply renounces his allegiance with-o-t attempting to disrupt the union. Tha action of this man ought to be told certain hyphenated gentry about New York, including one Jeremiah O' Leary, in the hope that they will go and do likewise. The United States has been good to provide homes for all of us who were all foreigners once and we should be good enough to accept the privileges of our citizenship. But ii we must howl, why not follow the wise course of Brother von Clafen beck ? "ittle raisin? in the mountains.
