Coal and Iron Company. o Miss Springs Entertains Yesterday afternoon Miss Helen Springs was hostess to the Do-As-You Please Club. Eight members were present and Miss Charlotte Smith was a charming visitor. After an hour spent in sewing a delicious sal ad course was served by the hostess and Miss Margaret Springs. Miss Gladys Reid will have the next meet ing February 1. o Entertains Society The Home Circle Society of West Hickory was entertained Thursday afternoon by Mrs. Lloyd Miller, and the afternoon passed pleasantly while the company exchanged ideas in fancy work and embroidery,. Mrs. E. D. Sherrill and Mips Anna ShexriU, were welcome visitors. The hostess, assisted by Mtrs. E. B. Shaw, served delicious refreshments at the close of the meeting and Mrs, J. D. Deal invited the society to meet with her on February 8. o With Mrs. Hatfield At her home on Thirteenth avenue, yesterday afternoon, Mrs. L. L. Hat field, was the charming hostess to the Embroidery club when Mrs!. O. G. Henkel and Miss Grace Patrick were visitors. During the hour" de voted to needle work. Mrs. T. S. Stevenson continued the reading from the club book!. Later in the after noon Mrs. Henkel rendered a piano selection -and little Miss Lydia Hat field pleased with a comic reading. The mercury registered 26 degrees above zero during the night, but at 8:30 this morning it stood 31 de grees, i (Nathaniel Bost, a Hickory negro, convicted of larceny, was the first convict to secure a pardon from Gov ernor Bickett, as announced in the following Raleigh special to the Char lotte Observe,; . (Governor Biskett granted his first pardon today. It is for Nathaniel Bost, of Catawba county, a 19-year-old negro, who has served since last July on a 12-months sentence for-lar- ceny. The county health officers reported that the negro is sick and that his trouble is such that his re covery is handicapped by confine ment and the fixed diet necessary in prison life. Judge Lane and the mayor and other officials of Hickory recom mended the pardon, pledging to see that the youth receive proper medi cal attention, if he is pardoned!.
