As a result they destroyed 2S gallons of liquor, arrested Charlie Eurns and Sam Hil debran, Jr., two white men, took three negroes into custody and found a quantity of mash and a half dozen places where furnaces had been oper ating. The raid was most successful about Shoup's Ford on the upper South Fork river, and it was here that they ran into the most indications of blockad ing. Many large glass demijohns were found, some empty and others containing liquor, and they broke the bottles and poured out the booze. They brought five gallons with them to use an evidence against the negroes. Six old still furnaces were observ ed during the rounds, the officers said, but in no instance was a plant run ning. Lenoir, M'arc'b 11 The third day of the contest hearing of Dr- J. Ike Campbell, who is contestant for the seat of Congressman R. L. Doughton i.i his district, finds little or no- evi c.ice of fraud or illegal voting. The boast of showing up corrupt practices on the part of the election officials has totally collapsed and the hearing has do-f lnnorl into a drantr that is try ing on spectators and is beginnig to show effect on the officials taking part. Of the dozens of witnesses exam ined since Monday morning, prac tically nothing of a damaging nature has been revealed. Election o cials according to evidence, were most f.ii- T?ri snnarp to all concerned. Courthouse officials were the first to be examined wbsn the hearing convened Monday moring. Since that time witnesses reading absen tee votes, and payment of poll-taxs have hetn take up. The hearing so far has covered witnesses from Lower Creek, Little River, North Catawba North Lenoir. Lovelady. Hudson, Rhcdhiss, Mulberry, Wilson Creek, Johns River and Gam?yell precincts. Today Buffalo Cove, Kings Cree. Globe, Patterson. Richland and lad kin Valley townships were taken up. GREAT OPPORTUNITIES IN POULTRY RAISING l one else get what they want by do- j inc? this and at the same time you : Progressive Farmer. This season of all seasons promises vcVy great results with poultry. With cottcn toppling from tho throne, our folks are thinking more about growing those things at home that can be consumed on the table and therefore the poultry breeder never had a greater opportunity than he has this season to sell thous ands of farmers who are planning to increase very largely the num ber of poultry on the farm. Also, there is a decided disposition on the part of our farmers not to grew mixed breeds or just any old chickens, but they are going in for the purebreds Our suggestion is that everyone having a surplus of purebred chickens of any kind of eggj from purebred chickens should place a small ad in our classified or display columns , offering for sale their surplus.
