VERA GORDON IN "GREATEST LOVE" PASTIME TODAY Jacksonville, Fla., May 16.; Five well known citizens of .South Jack sonville, including Dr. P. E. Watts, prominent physician, were at liberty last night on bail of $1000 each and deputies held warrants for the arrest of sixteen other ' persons as a result of the Hogging of P. E. Chambers, telegraph operator employed by the Florida East Coast Railroad at South Jacksonville. Chambers, who claims to have been twice kidnapped and beaten and ordered to leave South Jackson ville within twenty four hours, de clares he is at a loss to understand why he was mistreated. The first attack he told the authorities, occur, red the night of May 6 and the sec ond the night of May 11. On the latter date, accompanied by another man, he was returning to South Jack sonville in his automobile fi'om a country dance, he said, when a score of men held him up, and after strip ping, flogged him and struck him on the head with the butts of pistols. He and his companion claim to have recognized several of the attackers and the warrants were issued late yes terday after the authorities had spent several days investigating the affair A : preliminary . hearing for the men arrested has " been set for next Friday.
