was held in Indianapolis beginning
Nov. 20 of the same year. There are
no authentic records to give , the at
tendance at that meeting, out of
which grew one of the most powerful
and influential bodies ever welded to
gether in the United States. It must
have been small, however, for one of
the first theatres in Indianapolis
was used for the meeting place, and
it held only a few hundred persons.
Membership campaigns ; by the
Grand Army of the Republic con
tinued from year to year, but an ol
f icial record of the membership is
available only so far back as 1878,
when it was given as 3101G. It was
about this time that the men who
had fought and won a great war be
gan to make their presence fjeM in
all matters pertaining to the advance
ment of the country and as a .result
the G. A. R. increased in member
shin strength by many thousands.
The crest of the strength of the
organization was reached in 1889 and
1890, when 409,489 were reported in
onorl ctsnHinfr 'The Tieak was reach

the encampment -the-following year
showed a loss of approximately two
thousand.
