He first sent it out an onymously, but as .the hymn gained favor the authorship became known The words of this carol well portray the spirit 'oi simplicity- and tranquil ity of Bethlehem, and its inhabitants who so little suspected that a King was in their midst. Although written especially as a Christmas song, it is of such a' nature it is often used on other occasions. r Many musical settings of this beau tiful poem have been made but the two that are most used are by the English composer "Joseph Bariiby (whose "Sweet and Low" is a universal favor ite) and the American composer Louis H.
