FACE SIX TT1E MONROE JOURNAL. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1JJ2. PAGE SIX i : 4 - A ;t 1 1 THRIFT is based on common tense. Thrift is not stinginess. A stingy man is not thrifty: he is inertly mean. The need for thrift real thrift is evidenced by facts. A very small percentage of men reach old a'e poaamsed of independent means. It is true that most wage earners do not make enough money in the course of a life-tinu- to save enough to be even moderately wealthy at old age. Nevertheless hundreds of thousands of payroll men and women do save enough during their productive years to keep the wolf from the door in their old age and have comforts and even luxuries that would not bo the'is had they fritted away small and seemingly insignificant sums of money in the earlier years. The late James J. Hill, master ra'lroad builder, declared that the man who could not or wiuld not save money did njt have the seed of success within him; he was foredoomed to failure and might as well drop out of the race. But the mere saving of money and its accum ulation is only a means to the end, and the building of even a modest fortune requires that a man should have the judrrient to discern in vestment opportunities. The ambitious man wants to Increase his income; and when he has spare money he should seek the investments that will give him the best return. Our message to you is this. GETTING READY FOR LEGION CONVENTION New Orleans Makiag ArraageneaU for Hoasiag Oac Haar4 aaa Pifty Taoatand GueU New Orleans, Aug. 21.-Ships, Pullman cars, tents, and Army sup ply base building, private homes and hotels will house the thousands of delegates and visitors expected at the American Legion national convention in New Orleans. October 16-20. A preliminary canvass by the con vention hotels and housing committee has demonstrated the fact that New Orleans will be able to house 150, COO guests. Passenger liners will be docked and former "gobs" and marines will be alloted first cabin accomodations on them. A Pullman city of hundreds of cars, to be established in three large rail road yards, will care for 14,000 visi tors, the convention committee has announced. The "hotels on wheels will be provided with all the conven iences of a modern hostelry. Dining car service will be maintained, show- er bath will be erected and all equip ment will be electrically lighted while parked. The railroads have established a charge of $12 for parking in addition to the So4 for daily Pullman car ren tal. The average cost to the Pullman guests will be about $2 a day. If the size of the convention crowd warrants it, tents will be erected on the parquets of some of the more centrally located boulevards. A model barracks, patterned after those of cantonment days, will be established in the Army Supply Base, a fifteen million dollar structure on the river front. Private homes will be thrown open to the veteran who brings his wife to the convention. New Orleans hotel men have agreed upon a uniform rate schedule of $1.50 day without bath and $3.50 with bath. Charges in the tent cities and improvised hotels will be from fifty to seventy-five cens a day and the cost in private homes will compare favorably with the hotel rates. All reservations for rooms during the five days of the convention must be made through the Legion depart ment adjutant of the state from which the visitor comes. Miss. Moore Nearly Drowns Mr. Mllrriv Walter cavail the Ufa of Miss Ruby Moore of Roanoke, Va., last Saturday afternoon at Helms' pond.
