At half past 12 o'clock Chairman Wilson called J. Krnet Erwin to the chair and ivl nested T. G. Cobb and J. I). Cassels to act as secre taries. On taking the chair Mr. Erwin made a short but pointed speech, arousing" much enthusiasm for the cause of J e ni oc racy. i-tturteen precincts were represented and the court room was filled with delegates. There were 5) votes in the convention, making" 30 votes necessary to a choe. hi motion the temporary organization was made perm anent. The convention then went into the nomination of candi dates. For the House of Repre sentatives the names of Mr. Jeph P. Spainhour and Mr. -1. Ernest Erwin were placed heiure the convention. Mr. Spainhour was de clared the choice of the Dem crats of Burke for Represen tative. For Sheriff there was only one name presented that of the present popular incum- hent. Mr. C. M. McDowell, and lie was nominated bv ac clamation. l Here were two names pre sented for Register of Deed -that of the present Regis ter. Mr. J. Hamp Giles, and -t" Mr. H. M. Rhvne, of Lin- ville township. Mr.Gile s was nominated on first ballot, the vote standing, Giles 44, Rhvne 15. The names of Messrs. D. B. Mull, (the present incum bent,) C. A. Harbison and J. M. Pat ton were presented for the office of Countv Treasur er. Mr. Harbison was nomi nated on third ballot. The vote stood, first ballot, Harbi son 21, Patton 14, Mull 24; second ballet, Harbison 27, Patton 7, Mull 25; third bal lot, Harbison 37, Patton 3, Mull 19. For Coroner the present holder of that office, Mr. J. M. Kincaid, received, on first ballot, 2)lA votes,, Mr. Bulow Scott 2SV2 and Mr. Carlton Giles 1. Mr. Scott was nomi nated on second ballot, the vote standing, Scott 32 Kincaid 2(4. Mr. D. P. Denton was nomi nated, on first ballot, for Sur veyor, the vote standing, Den ton 37, J. J. Abernethy 22. For Count' Commissioners the names of Messrs. W. B. Berry and J. D. Glass, pres ent incumbents, and R. P. Nantz, J. W. Simpson', J. T. McGimpsey, J. A. Lackey, A. N. Dale and J. S. Tillev were placed before the convention. On first ballot the vote stood, Glass 30, Berry 32, Nantz 2o, Simpson 27, McGimpsey 32, Lackey 18l2, Dale 12. Glass, Berry and McGimpsey were declared the choice of the convention for commissioners. The name of Mr. I. T. Avery, the present incumbent, was presented to the conven tion for the nomination for the County Solicitorship. Mr. presented. Prof. Abernethy was chosen on second ballot. The vote was as follows: First ballot Pearson 2i)l2, Abernethv 2i)l2. Second bal lotPearson 28, Abernethv 302. On motion of Col. Pearson the nomination of Prof. Abernethy was made unanimous. The convention then chose the following- as delegates to the Senatorial convention: Morganton No. 1 J. F. Spain hour, J. W. Wilson, Jr., I. T. Avery. Morganton No. 2 S. J. Ervin, A. C. D., 1900, a certain tract of land lying' and being in Burke county and State of North Carol in, adjoining- the lands of J. W. Garrison, W. A. Baily, Mart Roper and others, bounded as follows: Beginniug on a black-oak Bailey's south-west corner, and running south 108 poles to a stake in a field, George Brittain's corner; thence east with George and John Brittain's line 106 poles to a post-oak, on the side of the Rutherford road; thence north 25 degrees west with the road 30 poles to a stake; thence north 23 degrees west with the road 40 poles to a stake; thence north 8 degrees west 45 poles to a stake in the road, Bailey's corner; thence west withBailey's line 134 poles to the beginning, containing 100 acres, more or less, being the tract of land conveyed bv Emily A. Hapjoldt to W. M. Orders and' E. R. Orders by deed dated the 25th day of August, 1883, as recorded in book "J", page 13, in the office of the Register of Deeds of Burke county, the interest of W. M.
