There are many honors that can be earned in these twelve years from the county all the way to the national level. These honors can be earned by j demonstrations and project re j cord books. There are many trips and scholarships avail able for the worthy 4-H mem ber. The highlight of any North Carolina 4-H'ers career after many years of hard work is to be tapped into the State 4-H Honor Club. Any Honor Club member will tell you that all the work and effort is weil worth it when you feel that tap on your shoulder in front ( of over one thousand other 4 H'ers, who well know all th-j work you did to deserve that tap in the impressive Honor Club Tapping at State 4-11 Club Week. Yes, 4-H work is most re warding and educational and it would be beneficial for any young person to invest his time in. Club work has proved over and over again this by chanfe- ' iog the shy. withdrawn young member when he first joins to the "leader of tomorrow" that you see in any older 4-H mem ber. Or as someone once said, "The 4-H'ers of today will be the leaders of tomorrow!" PROJECT WORK By Richard Bowen Mishop Spring 4-H Club From a one acre oorn pro ject in 1957, I have increased my project work in size and member through 1962. Dur- j ing this period of six years I have completed 30 field crops projects. This truly indicates the interest and enjoyment 1 have received in 4-H work. The improved skills and me thods of farming have helped make a profit for our family budget. Through my project work, I have learned of the need for | seed selection, including var ieties and type; proper ferti lizer rate for crops; proper J cultural practices to eliminate weeds and decrease damage to i feed roots; proper chemicals | and procedures for insect and disease control; importance of | timely harvest and storage, and many other skills neoded to assist in improving the pro duction level on our farm. I have completed 69 4-H projects and these projects lave taught me good recoro eeping which has brought nany fruitful returns in trips, riends, ribbons, and honors. 4-H FORESTRY PROJECT By Harold Thompson Mishop Sprints 4-H Clab Having completed one year f Tree Identification as my -H project I decided to put ume unused pasture land to rork for me. In January 1962. ordered 1000 pine seedlings trough our 4-H Forestry Pro ram. By March they had ar ived and were ready tor ilanting. We then borrowed a libble from the North Caro ina Forestry Department and tegan to undertake the job if transplanting the seedlings. Vith the help of my Mother, t took approximately 10 hours >f working time to set out the foung pines. Now, February 1963. Almost une year from the date we transplanted them, about ί>5·ί nt the original 1000 seedlings are living. They range lrom 2 to 3'<4 feet in size. This has been good experi ence to me and gives me a feeling of great satisfaction to see them grow. 4-H CAN HELP YOU By Glnny Honeycutt Intermediate Cloverettes 4-H can help you in many ways. "It will lead to new challenging experi ences, to knowledge that will sharpen the imagination, and to skills that challenge the in genuity of youth." Harrill says that during Na tional 4-H Club Week, March 2-9, many girls and boys will be recognized for their out standing accomplishments in 4-H Club work. "The great challenge to' leadership is a belief in the philosophy that what 4-H does for a boy or a girl is more important than what the boy I or girl does for 4-H". adds1 Harrill. "This was so well de- ' fined in a statement by a for mer 4-H member who is now a college student. The student said, 'Trips, awards, pins, certificates and other material gains become insignificant as I attempt to determine my most noteworthy accomplish ment as a local 4-H member. Becoming an asset to my fam ily by acquiring skills, making various improvements about the home, providing skills and valuable knowledge to others through demonstrations and activities are satisfying to me. Consequently, my noteworthy accomplishment as a 4-H mem ber is revealed—the finding of Γ a vocational direction and pur pose of my life.' "There are many compensa tions for service to others, but the highest reward for leader ship is not what one gives but what he becomes because of it." declares Harrill. "In the role of leadership, we need to lemember to be ourselves, to begin where we are, to use our talents and to remember that we cannot live and progress on reflected glory of past ach ievemment. We grow into greatness as we build on past accomplishments." rent Pitching rime Says 4-H .eader Glover BY TOMMY D.
