Fire Departments from Loris. Marion, Mumns, TaOor City and Conway sped to the scene as did nearly a dozen fire fighting units of the S. C. Commission on Forestry, Co unty Police, the Loris Rescue Squad and hundreds of volun teers. Tricky winds mad»· back firing a difficult and dang erous procedure end several times fire-fighting parties were nearly trapped by blazes which turned on them. One group was trapped but fought their way through the searing heat to get another firetruck load of water and returned to continue their bat tle to save the home of Char les McQueen on Hermitage Road. Members of the group included Edsel Paul. Worley Mishoe, Junior Tyler, Albert Marsh and Don McQueen. The fire was first reported by Bill Wooten from his homt on the old Conway - White ville road. Loris firemen rush ed to the scene and saved tw«J tobacco barns and thought the fire was extinguished. How ever, moments later they saw it blaze up a hundred and fifty yards to the east. r rom tnen on tue fire burn ed fast and furiously, spread ing to Hwy. 9 and ultimately coming within 300 feet of th* home of Harold Hardwick on the eastern edge of Loris . Viewed from the fire tower at the eastern edge of town the conflagration was an awe some thing. Great towers ol black smoke would rise high above the wooers and sudden ly explode into fireballs that would set fire to trees 50 yards away. Ground flames would rush to the foot of a tree, race up the tree and soon the top would be flaming like a light wood torch. Miraculously apparently only one structure burned—a dog house—though the hot flames came within feet of homes a long Hwy. 9 and to Boyd's Builders Supply. Late Saturday afternoon the fire apparently had been turn ed by fire lanes cut by earth moving equipment and by wetted undergrowth but it continued to burn far into the night, casting a pall of smok? over the Loris area. Sunday the fire continued to smoulder but by Tuesday apparently had eaten its heart out. Woolen said he had no idea of just where or how the fire started. "I had gone into the house for a wrench," he said, "when the children came running in to say a fire was coming down the ditch bank. I called the fire department and they sav ed the two tobacco barns. Then as I started into the louse to write them a check. I saw that the fire had caught up about 150 yards out there (pointing toward Hwy. 9) in the wood·."
