She came tripping from the church door, her face ilushed by emotions awak ened by the just finished discourse, and eves bright with loving expectation. He shivered on the curbstone, where for an hour he had waited impatiently, with a burning heart fairly palpitating in his throat, and frozen fingers in liis pockets. They linked arms, and started for the residence of her parents. After a few moments hesitating silence, he said "Jane, we have known each other long. You must know just how I feel. You must have seen that, clear down at the bottom—Oh, Moses!" .1 slipped dowu on the ice with •e that his spine was driven He had sli such force that ins spme was driven up into his hat, and his lmt was tipped over his nose. She slipped, herself, that time, and saw little stars come down and dance before her eyes but he pulled her up in haste and went on:— "Yes just as I said, clear down at the bottom of my heart is a fervent love, on which I build my holies,. That love has helped me to face—Thunder!" lie was down again but scrambled up before she could stoop to help him, and said breathlessly:— "Yes, yes, Jolin You remember you just said love that helped you stand and face thunder. ?And that'you founded your hopes on—This pesky ice!" Q'fhere she sat. Joliu grasued the loose part of her sacque between the shoulders, with one hand, and raised her to her feet as one would lift a kitten from a pail of water by the lmcls of the neck. Then he said witli increased earnestness: "Of course, darting! and I have longed for an opportunity to tell my love, and hear those lips whisper—Whitop!" Somehow John's feet had sliped from under him, and he had come down like a capital V, with his lioad and feet point ing skyward. She twined her taoer fing ers in his curling locks and raised him to the stature of a man set his hat firmly over his eyes with both hands, and erie'd in breathless haste: "I understand! and let me assure yon, John, that if it is in my power to ligiitcn your cares, and make I'irighter your jour ney through life to—Jerusolem!" Having passed several sleepless nights, disturbed by the agonies and cries of suffering child, and becoming convinced that Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup was just the article needed, pro cured supply for the child. On reach ing home and acquainting his wife with what he had done, she refused to have it administered to the child, as she was strongly in favor of Homeopathy. That night the child passed in suffering, and the parents without sleep. Kcturning •home the day following, the father found the baby still worse and while contemp lating another sleepless night, the moth er stepped from the room to attend to some domestic duties, and left the father with the child. During her absence he administered a portion of the Soothing Syrup to the baby, and said nothing. That night all hands slept well, and the little fellow awoke in the morning bright and happy. The mother was delighted with the sudden and wonderful change, and although at first offended at the de ception practiced upon her, has contin ued to use the Syrup, and suffering, cry ing babies and restless nights have dis appeared. A single trial of the Syrup never yet failed to relieve the baby) and overcome the prejudices of the mother. Sold by all druggists. 25 cents a bottle. Sfi/'vtu from a I'VHtUvuttal .Sroiiif/e. Protection from the disease, not a medicinal agent which merely checks the paroxysm, is the grand desideratum wherever the endemic scourge of malaria prevails. Quinine does not afford this protection. The chief reason why Hos tetter's Stomach Bitters has won such immense popularity is that it prepares the system to resist the malarial pest. This it does by bracing and toning the physical organism regulating and pro moting an equal flow and distribution of the animal fluids, and establishing diges tion on a sound basis. Not only is fever and ague prevented, but the worst types of the disease are conquered by it. &uch is the only just conclusion til be drawn from the overwhelming evidence in its favor. It is equally efficacious in dys pepsia, constipation, liver complaint and general debility, and rheumatic com plaint, and is a reliable diuretic and nervine. MARKETS BY TELEGRAPH.
