The arm of a man, whose hand is not
safe to rest on a lady's arm, never ought
to lie taken by her. "Hands oil you
say. This is all well, if their hands are
where they ought not to be but the man
who takes an objectionable liberty with
a lady, without the Rhadow of an excuse,
cut his society entirely. Don't seek to
educate him and be obliged to be on
your guard all the while, for, as pleasant
a pastime as it may be, it is dangerous.
Let those women who so despise the
men, and bemoan the fate that draped
them in petticoats, keep their distance
from all rascals—the rest of the men will
not disturb them. Nothing so disgusts a
man, or makes him downright swearing
mad sooner, than to have a woman show
to him by word or sign, through some
frivolous and innocent cause on his part,
that she is on the defensive for, to use a
slang phrase, "It gives her dead away,'
and impresses him with the idea that she
may not be the embodiment of so much
divinity as he supposed. Mother, teach
the young budding flower of your family

Teach her to know that as the women
and God of a nation are, so is that nation,
and that the God and women of a nation
are what men make them, and to so im
prove the light and advantages she lias
that, by the influence of her beautiful
life, erring, passionate, blundering men
may be made better and more capable of
framing the jurisprudence of the race.
SIGNS AMONG THE SIOUX

Sioux City Journal.
A gentleman from np river who is in
the city says that it is not unlikely that
there will be serious trouble with the
Sioux of the Red Cloud and Spotted Tail
agencies this season. These Sioux have
been moved several times previous to lo
cating them on their present reservation,
and they have a dread of being some
time sent to the Indian territory, as the
Poncas were. Some of them, indeed a
great portion of the young bucks, are in
clined to look with disfavor 011 the move
ment to build railroads through the res
ervation to the Clack Hills. They con
sider these, railroads as the entering
wedges of the white man's occupation of
the whole Indian country, and are not
disposed to assent to any right of way
treaty.
The influence of Spotted Tail, or Old
Spot as he is familiarly called, is 011 the
wane. Two Strike, aud several other of
the more turbulent chiefs, are growing in
influence, and it is doubtful if Spot
conld carry any new treatv through
without the help of these rival chiefs.
The older men of the tribe are anxious
to avoid trouble with the whites, and are
willing to make almost any concession iu
order to keep a nominal state of peace,
but the young bucks persist in going out
iu search of ponies and scalps after the
annual sun dance, which is held early
each summer. In the opinion of tliis gen
tleman a.great many whites were killed
every year in a quiet way, that were nev
er heard of except at the war dance,where
the killer boasted of his deed and claimed
liis standing as a warrior. After the
knowledge we have of the way such
things have been done right iu our own
neighborhood, as shown at the late trial
of the Winnebago murderers, this theory
does not seem extravagant. The Indian
who cannot boast of scalps taken and
horses stolen is but little respected in his
tribe. Even the squaw of his bosom is
apt to twit him with his lack of sand and
scalps at times, aud to remark in a casual
way that she has married a cow when
she supposed she was wedding a warrior,
and inquire where are the scalps that
should ornament the lodge, and where
the American horses she should have.
Such endearing remarks as these are apt
to prevail against the cool logic of Spot
ted Tail and the entreaties of the fathers
of the tribe. The young buck goes out.

somebody's darling stnrts to the Black
llills and is never heard of again. But
the ambition of the bride is satisfied, and
this is a mueli more important matter
than the loss of a scalp or two, as all mar
ried men can test ify.

In short the Sioux are Indians, and this
leing the case there is, and always will
be, danger of trouble. The Sioux on the
reservation are in constant communica
tion with Sitting Bull's hostile* across
the border, and this dm* not a little to
make the young men restless. That
something interesting is likely to happen
in the Sioux country this summer is the
opinion of the up-river gentleman.

train from Yankton. Leave Sioux City at 2.15 p.
i. and arrive at Chicago at &.2L) p. M.
Sleeping cars run through from Sioux City to
Chicago, fare. on sleeping car.
Passengers leaving Chicago, bound west, at
10 A. si., via the Illinois Central railroad, will
arrive at Sioux City the next day at 11.30 A. X.
