Smith, Han cock's most intimate friend, has to-day admitted to a Tribune reporter what wan charged againHt him renpeoting hut will ingiiesH to support Tilden with the army in 1877. Oen. Smith woo shown a Blip from the Boston Globe containing a statement of Hiram Atkinson of Ver mont, said by Atkinson to be derived from him. The statement is substantiat es follows: During the electoral contro versy, it was claimed by the republicans that Senator Ferry, acting vice-presi dent, ought to count the votes indepen dent of the direction of the senate and house.. On the other hand, the demo crats claimed that congress alone had the right to count the votes. While these questions were pending, and prior to the establishment of the electoral commis sion, Gen. Hancock informed Gen. Sher man that it was proper for him (Sher man) to be apprised of what his (Gen. Hancock's) position was in the matter. He therefore would say that he consid ered that Tilden had been elected presi dent of the United States and Grant's term of office expired at midnight on the 3rd of March that regardless of any thing Ferry might do, if congress declared that Tilden was elect ed president he (Hancock) believ ed he had the right to take the oath of office wherever he might be. He understood that Mr. Tilden had taken the oath of office, and if'lie should re ceive orders from Tilden as president af ter midnight on the 3d of March he should obey them. Atkinson says Gen. W. F. Smith made this statement at Waterbury, Vt., publicly, in the presence ot over sixty prominent democrats in the state. "Is that correct, general the reporter asked. "Yen, I suppose it is correct enough but this refers to Mr. Atkinson, not me." "But he says he got the statement from you." "I did mention something of the sort, I believe." "As recommendation to Gen. Han cock "No, not in that way at all. We were simply talking among ourselves about what has happened in the past about fraud, and so I mentioned this as a fact in connection with fraud. I have noth ing further to say about it." "Does Mr. Atkinson states ubstantially what you said?" "Oh, yes, that is correct." I "From whom did you obtain the infor mation V" "That can't tell you." "But you mode the statement public ly." "I might have alluded to it publicly, but I don't think so. Anyway, I hadn't the slightest idea that it would be pub lished. When I made the statement as I said, we were talking amongst our selves." 'Did you state as a fact within your own knowledge, or as a fact of which you had been informed "I stated it as a fact. Of course it would scarcely be right, for me to say something that was not true. That is all I intend to Bay about it." PIERRE AND RAPID STAGE LINE. ltapid City Journal. The Northwestern Stage Company are now here, and to stay. They have select ed grounds for their stables and corrals, and mechanics will at once be put to work to erect them. The site selected is a tine one for the purpose, one of the very best that could be selected. It is on lower Main street, between Fourth and Fifth streets, aud embraces a half block, or sixteen lots. The property was for merly owned by Mr. \V. L. Holcomb, aud he valued it highly but in a spirit of commendable enterprise he said to the special agent of the company, "If yon mean business, take it I will acknowl edge the transfer." So short work was made of this matter. All the necessary station sites have been selected between here and Pierre, and men are now engag ed erecting upou them the necessary im provements. So there is little doubt that the stages of the Northwestern Company will soon be rolling into Eapid City daily over the Pierre route, bring ing us within 35 hours' travel of the steamboat landing at Fort Pierre and we may also promise that before the plains between here aud the Missouri river are whitened by the snows of an other winter the railroad terminus can be reached by stage within that time from Rapid City. The Northwestern is one of the oldest and strongest staging corporations in America, its directory are on terms of intimate relationship with the managers of the great railroad com panies that are pushing their lines west ward through lJakotu, and there is no doubt that transferring their vehicles and stock from the Bismarck to the Rap id City road means the opening up of a new and coutrolliug thoroughfare of travel to and from the Black Hills which is to be iu perpetual operation—which will be operated in winter as well as summer. The Central Metropolis oi the Black Hills is rapidly rising to the posi tion her natural resources and surround ings entitle her to—the center of the mines aud the center of the farming lauds. -t Mtoiru Tinrii Jierehunt. Having passed several sleepless nights, disturbed by the agonies and cries of a suffering child, and becoming convinced that Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup was just the article needed, pro cured a supply for the child. On reach ing home and acquainting his wife with what he lml done, she refused to have it administered to the child, as she was strongly in favor of Homoeopathy. That night the child passed in suffering, and the parents without sleep. Returning home the day following, the father found tlie baby still worse and while contemp lating another sleepless night, the moth stepped from tlie room to atteud to some domestic duties, and left tlie father with the child. During her absence he administered a portion of the Soothing Syrup to the baby, and said nothing. That night all hands slept well, and the little fellow awoke in the morning bright and happy. The mother was delighted with the sudden and wonderful chani aud although at first offended at the ception practiced upou her, has contin ued to use the Syrup, and suffering, cry ing babies and restless nights have dis appeared. A single trial of the Syrup never yet failed to relieve the baby, and overcome the prejudices of the niotlier. to and families..-The right party with small capital can secure a valuable agency worth $10 to $25 it Address THE TAYLOR HEAD REST CO.. }u18-d&wlin 1M) Lake St., Chidago, Ills. THE WESTWM0 MARCH OF THE EMPIRE. IUpid City loaiuL Six years ago white men Five years of Deudwood could was oovcredf with pine trees. Four years ago there were not two hundred permanent residents in Bapid City, the central metropolis of the Black Hills. Three years ago no grain had been sown in the Rapid valley. Less than two years ago hostile Indians at tacked a train within two miles of Bapid City. Now a chain of farms stretches from Bapid City to the Cheyenne, a dis tance of forty miles, and the first twelve miles they ail join eoch other. We now have telephone lines connecting us with the interior camps. We now have tele graph lines connecting us with the out Bide world. All the details have been settled for establishing here a system of water-works at an early day. We have three large and elegant public halls. We have a money-order post office. We have an excellent educational system. We have religious and Sunday school organizations. We have more pretty girls to the old batchelor than any other town west of the Missouri river and north-of the Union Pucific railroad. And now Hillard & DeMott's big circus and menagerie, with the electric light, etc., is on the way in from Pierre and next summer we will have another big show that will come in by railroad—we will venture to predict. RAPID CITY POPULATION. ltapid City Journal. 'Squire Burleigh, census enumator for this district, reports the population of Bapid Citv at between five and six hun dred, of whom 236 are malfe adults, and the others 'are females and children. These figures are lower than we had sup- posed, but when you get right down to bed-rock facts Chicago, St. Louis, Bapid City, and all other commercial centres of America, not excepting Deadwood and Lead City, are given to writing down the biggest figures the conscience will tolerate in estimating population. With six hundred to start on now, and two new stage lines centering here, we can safely calculate upon a population of 1,500' by this time next vear.
