A party by tlic name of Jolmson walked into Mauliul Hildrup's ollice ycuterduy, and lufkcd for HOIDO While Deputy Marshal Btilwell was searching for the bundle Johnson enter tained him with a few scraps of personal experience. He mentioned one rather remarkable circumstance. At the time of his arrest he had in his possession $100 counterfeit bills, and these were used in evidence against him. llecently it was discovered that one of the bills was genuine, and it had been forwarded to him from the treasury department he had always supposed that bill to be a bad one, and he was as much surprised on learning of his mistake as he was on receiving such testimony of official honesty. After Johnson's departure Stillwell was telling the Btory to several gentle men in the office when Captain Aall spoke up. "Why," said he, I discovered that bill two years ago, and this is the first I have heard of it since." "How did you run across it?" asked one of the party. "I was sent to Boston about two yenrs ago to arrange affairs in the United States district attorney's office. In sort ing over the papers I found among a lot of indicements that against Johnson. There were four or five $100 counterfeits at tached, one of them a bank whose bills had never to my knowledge been coun terfeited. I investigated and found it to be a genuine bank note, and accordingly I sent it to Washington." "Who is Johnson. "A clever scoundrel," replied Captain Hall. "He was arrested in Boston sev eral years ago for counterfeiting, gave bail and disappeared. When the day TO his trial came, his counsel submitted to the court a certificate from a physician out west, setting forth that Johnson was to ill to appear. The case was therefore continued. The next time it was called a certificate of his death was presented, and accordingly the case was stricken from the docket. "Meanwhile, Johnson lmd been to Pittsburg, and got accquainted with a dry-goods merchant. The latter was not doing a very prosperous business, and at last tried to borrow money to maintain his credit. Failing everywhere else, he applied to Johnson, who loaned him a $1,1)00 government bonds. On his note secured by this bond, the merchant bor rowed the sum he required. Shortly thereafter Johnson found it necessary to go west in a hurry, aud the merchant scraped together 8300 and gave it to him on account of the debt. When the note came due the merchant was unable to pay it, so the bank renewed it, and re tained the bond as security. Eventually the merchant went into bankruptcy, and then it was discovered that the bond was one of four which had been stolen from a widow down east. At this timo .Tohuson was supposed to be dead. Iu the summer of 187G, Detective Tyr rell met in this eity a man named Shaw, who had married the widow of an alder man. He recognized in Shaw the man Johnson, arrested him, and took him to Pittsburg. It was then that Johnson left some of his property with Marshal Campbell. The Pittsburg jury failed to convict him, there being a lack of evi dence as to the manner in which he got possession of the stolen bond. He was then taken to Boston, tried on the old charge of counterfeiting, convicted, and sent- to the penitentiary for four years. He is just out, and I suppose that S100 bill helped him to come west." Possibly Mr. Johnson may be heard of again. SANGUINE SPINK. Lead City Enterprise. Hon. S. L. Spink, of Yankton, is in Deadwood to attend a meeting of the democratic territorial central committee to fix the time and place of holding the democratic territorial convention to nominate a candidate for congress. Ac cording to the Deadwood papers of this morning, Mr. Spink reports that the democrats of the eastern aud southeast ern sections of the territory are sanguine of carrying the congressional election this fall, and that they prefer that the candidate shall be taken from northern Dakota or the Black Hills, with a prefer ence for the latter. Among those whom he mentioned as being satisfactory are Barney Caultied, Judge Murphy, Capt. Maratta and H. S. Back. It tl'ie candi date is to come from the Hills either Cauliield or Murphy will do and in this section will carry an overwhelming maj ority. T, July 27.—Fort Pembi na, situated about one mile from Pembi na, is the scene ot some considerable, ex citement and one company of soldiers are now under arms. The excitement was eaiisctd by a report that a warrant was about to be issued by United States Court Commissisner Nelson for the ar rest of Capt. Edward Collins, seventieth infantry, U. H. A., on a complaint that lie luiu furnished an armed guard of United States soldiers to protect the property ot private parties and prevent the seizure of the same by an execution in the hands of Sheriff Brown of I'embi na county. When Capt. Collins got wiml of the report he ordered out Capt. Troxel of company K, with his company to guard his approach to the foi t, and to allow no one to enter unless they declare their business or say they were|not an officer armed with a warrant to arrest Capt. Collins. The whole matter is the outgrowth of a move ment to establish a free ferry across the lied river between St. Vincent and Pem bina within the limits of a licensed ferry. So great is the excitement at the fort that admission was refused Collector McMurtrie of the United States customs, who desired to visit the post on official business, unless he would declare the nature of his errand. This he did not deem proper to do, and fjp returned to Pembina without gaining admission. Collector McMurtrie will make a written report to Gen. Teiry in accordance with the facts.
