Regular meeting this evening. Work in M. E. degree. IHl'.ll JLACOX1VS. The St. Helena political meeting called for to-night, has been postponed. The Milwaukee company is building an immense water tank at Elk Point, with a brick underpinning. Ten dollars per ton was asked for liny on the streets yesterday, the blizzard in creasing its value temporarily. The interruption in railroad transpor tation by the storm has produced a great scarcity of the best grade of kerosene oil. D. B. Oooley receives orders from sev eral hundred miles away for the saddles manufactured by him here in Yankton. J)uring Wm. Tobin's absence in the upper country some one burglarized his paint shop and stole all his tools, Tobin knows the man who did the job and has an eye on him. Several loads of wheat and other produce were in the market to-day. The disappearance of the snow is making the roads very bad and until they improve there will not be much movement of pro duce. C. H. Van Tassel is of .the opinion that there was little loss among Jim river cat tle growers by the blizzard. The cattle up- that way are all in first class condi tion and aie generally able to stand a much worse storm. An antelope was killed by a settler near.Gayville a day or two ago, and it is being served out to-day to the customers of Bray's Capital street market. Several of these animals have been seen recently e&st of-the Jim in this county. During and since the storm so little wheat came into town-that the Exoelsior mill was compelled to shut down, but to-day receipts have been about 500 bushels, and grinding is resumed. Prices range from 75 to 77 cents per bushel. The sick Russian, who was a member of the party which arrived on Monday even ing, and of whose sickness mention was made in yesterday's paper, died last night and was buried to-day. As yet there are no other cases of sickness among the newly arrived immigrants. The only son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Krudwig, of the Pacific house, died last night of diphtheria. The deceased wag a bright and intelligent .lad of five and a half years of age, and his loss is a sore af fliction to the family. The funeral will take place at two o'clock to-morrow. The Turners' will give their second grand ball on Tuesday next, the 26th inst. All arrangements are for a first-class entertainment and complete and suffi cient tickets are already sold to insure success. Their entertainments are always and deserve to be, well patronized. Will Lower went down the road this morning with a squad of men to pick up the telegraph wire and place it where it will work. He was out most of the day yesterday and expects to have the wire up as far as Gayville to-night. George Naile is working with another squad from the Sioux City end and it is proba ble that theliriewill be in working order •gain by the end of this week. DriBucb»i)ftn has had an experience with a character of the tramp species and deairea, to warn his fejlow beings against placing too much confidence in an un grateful individual. He gave his name as Fori Hervey, said he was of 'rich-but respectable parents and had a brother who was a Presbyterian minister. He had previously worked for a man named Kidder at Vermillion.- Upon these rec ommendations the doctor took him in and Iqaned him a pair of pants, a pair of overshoes and a pair of gloves and per mitted him to lunch at the family board and deep under the roof, meantime pay ing Jhim aeventy-flve cents a day for pre tending to extricate potatoes from the doctor's patch. The man went away jrery suddenly and took with him his wages and all the clothes the doctor had V4S? S ,\ ,1 vi,ys loaned liim, besides being well filled with tlie provender which abounds at the Bu ohanan house. The dootor is anxious that no .one elae be impoaednpon and for the protection of the public has given us these details to work np. ••«•.:,i The county commissioners met this afternoon for the purpose of receiving and acting upon tlie report of Oharles Eiseman, A. F. Hay ward and Robert Oox, the reviewers appointed to assess the damages douo to the lands of H. F. Jenoks & Son and Maj. J. M. Stone by the locution of a public highway on the line separating their lauds. The re viewers made the following report: To the honorable board of County Commit sioner* for the county of Yankton, D. T.: GENTLEMEN—We the undersigned cit izens of said county, having been ap pointed by your honorable body as review ers in the case of u"certain!proposed high way petitioned for by C. E. Brooks, Wm. Boxand.others, have the honor to report follows: According to instructions we met at thepSice of the county clerk, on October lltli. 1880, at 10 o'clock a. m. and quali fied by taking the prescribed oath in the regular manner. Some of the alleged aggrieved parties'wishing for a postpone ment of the oase, we adjourned to meet on October 18,1880. Pursuant to adjournment we met on October 18, 1880, and adjourned until October 20,1880, when we again met and the protesting parties being present, we proceeded to perform the duties imposed on us. After a careful examination of the proposed highway and the lands adjaoent thereto, we believe and recommend to your hon orable body that damages in the follow ing amounts and to the following parties be allowed H. F. and Leroy M. Jeucks $ 501X1 nines M. Miss Lillie Blunt, a former resident of Yankton, arrived last night from St Louis on a visit. Wm. Tobin returned last night from Santee agency, where he has been en gaged in doing a large job of painting. The first freight train since the storm arrived to-night, and three or four more are expected between now and to-mor row. Mrs. Capt. Jackson, of Foit Sully, ar rived from the east last night, and is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Cravens. She will remain in Yankton until a steamboat leaves for Sully. Maj. James M. Brown and C.M. Bunt ing, late of Philadelphia, after making a thorough inspection of nearly all parts of southeastern Dakota for locations for cattle ranches, have selected, land near Forestburgi on the Jim, which they will stock with cattle. These gentlemen are now in Yankton, but will leave in a day or two to permanently locate upon their land. Xottee. The first sociable of the M. E. Society for this season will be held in the M. E. The steamer Big Horn, of the Coulson line, loaded with Indian goods for Rose bud landing, left to-day at noon. The Fontenelle, of the Peck line, left this afternoon for Fort Pierre. She had a full load of freight and a number of passengers. The Nellie Peck, from Sioux City, is expeoted to reaoh here to-morrow. Her destination is Forts Sully and Bennett. There are about twenty passengers in Yankton awaiting the arrival of that boat to take passage to poiuts above Pierre. The steamer Big Horn had a narrow escape last night from destruction by fire. It is a custom on steamboats to keep a coal oil stove burning in the pan try to keep coffee warm for the watch u. Last night while the watchman was on the lower deck, the file from the lamp was communicated to the wood work in the pantry, and if it had not been that the stoward fortunately awoke about this time and had his attention at tracted by the smell of smoke, the Big Horn might have beeu a thing of the past. A few pails full of wator, applied where they did the most good, were suf ficient to quench the incipient fire.
