HEAD LICE AND BODY MITES
We have already told a'oout a disease called impetigo
that makes sores on a person's skin. There are two other
common afflictions of the skin that bother both young
people and older people. These are not caused by
microbes, bpt by something larger. One is caused by a
louse, and the other by a very tiny spider.
When this louse or this little spider cause sores to form
on aperson's skin microbes then get into the skin and the
sores get pus in them.
There is a kind of louse that lives in a person's hair.
Sometimes a person may have a large number of these
lice in his hair, and when this happens his scalp often
itches. He scratches the places where it itches, and some
times he scratches so hard that he breaks through the skin.
Then microbes from his fingernails may cause sores to
form.
These lice lay their eggs in person's hair. To keep the.
eggs from falling out of the hair, the louse makes a kind
of glue and sticks each egg to a hair. So it is very hard to
get these eggs out of a person's hair.
The doctors have medicines that will get the eggs out
quickly, but many people live too far from a doctor to
Visit him for this reason. One way of getting rid of both
the lice and the eggs at home is to soak your hair in
kerosene and then wrap a towel aronud your head and
leave it there for two hours. After that, wash your hair
with soap. Then soak your hair in warm vinegar. The
vinegar helps to kill the eggs. To kill all of the lice and
eggs in your hair, you should repeat this treatment several
times, about 10 days apart.
Another way to get rid of lice in your hair is to wash
your hair two times a day for sevearl days with a kind
of soap called Derbacs Soap. You can.buy it in town at a
drugstore.
We mentioned another disease caused by a tiny spider.
The-doctors call this disease Scabies. A lot of people just
call it "the itch." To lay eggs, the female spider
burrows into a person's skin. This makes the skin itch,
and usually this itching is worse at night. As thes little
spiders increase in number they may go all over a person's
body. They especially like to lay eggs in folds or creases
in the skin, and especilly in moist areas. Sometimes they
are found between the fingers, and along one's arm or
wrist.
If you get this disease, the doctors can cure it quickly.
However, if you cannot get to a doctor, here is what you
should do —First wash yourself well with soap and water.
Then rub some sulfur ointment wherever your skin itches.
You should put this ointment on twice a day until the.
itching and the sores are all gone. You can buy sulfur
ointment in a drugstore.
When people get this disease caused by the little
spiders, the microbes that cause impetigo often get into
the sores. Then the person has to have medicine for both

so, you should go to your doctor or to your field nurse
when you get these diseases.

non-technicai. Such material must be reduced to it's
simplest terms in order to be understandable to the
Navaho. Methods of home treatment are suggested for the
very practical reason that many Navahos are unable to
reach doctors or nurses. They must either treat such
afflictions at home or leave them untreated.)
