When I was a boy about big enough for school there
arrived at Shiprock a man who was to receive the name
of Tall Chieftain. Apparently he came there for reasons
connected with education. School buildings were put up.
Then people were told to bring in their children for
sc 001. The man called The One With Magic Power seems
to have been the very first to get word of this, and he was
told to pass along the word to people to place their chil
dren in school. He refused, saying, "Tell them yourselves.
I don't even want to put any of my children there." He
no doubt passed the same word out among his neighbors.
Presently he was approached by some men who were
leaders. They begged him to change his mind, but he
would not. And before long some policemen came to him.
So two times he was begged to change his mind. Nor
could his neighbors' minds be changed. Several other
Navajo leaders of that period tried to get him to change
his mind, but without success. Some pnen called Black
Horse, Sucker, and Ugly Knife, who were leaders at that
time, are also said to have begged him to change his
mind.

THE TROUBLE CAUSED OVER SCHOOLS BY THE ONE WITH MAGIC POWER

Expecting trouble, the followers of the one known as
The One With Magic Power armed themselves. On account
of this action of arming themselves, the one called Tall
Chieftain decided to send out soldiers. So he requested
troops from Fort Wingate. The soldiers arrived at Shiprock
without anyone knowing of their coming. The Navajos did
not know about it.
One of the Navahos went to the trading post, and there
he saw that troops had arrived. However, they arrested
him on the spot. They took away from him a pistol that
he was carrying. As Navahos came to the trading post they
were taken and held as prisoners inside. They were held
because it was the intention to move against The One
Who Has Magic Power a few days later.
When everything was ready the soldiers set out one day
about dawn, following the river. Some of the people living
along the route discovered the soldiers. "Just over there
by the base of that hill, surprisingly enough, soldiers are
moving along," they said. "And just before dawn. They
are following the wagon road there. There is no doubt
but that those soldiers are moving against our people.
