Lancaster, Jr. , Mr. George Carter, the purple heart veteran of ETO, who was told that he would have to wait until a colored unit of the State National Guard was set up in Bridgeport before he could en list has been amazed at his unique fame. For, it' now ap pears that he will be. the first of 'his race to join the State Guard without being segregated because of his color. A letter to Governor James If. McConaughy by Miss Mary H. Thornton, executive secre tary of the Bridgeport 'Strat ford Branch of the NAACP al so called Mr. Carter's attempt to enlist to his attention. The next day the Associated Press broke with the following news taken from this letter written to Miss Thornton. Mr. Dear Miss Thornton : I am grateful to you for your letter. I have sent the follow ing telegram to the governors of the three states which are as sociated with Connecticut in the present federalized nation al guard. "Are you satisfied with ar my policy of segregating into special units Negro soldiers of your state who desire to serve in the national guard? I am not. Have just learned of this practice. I know, the navy has ended discrimination. I do not want to see it in Connecticut army units. 1 "I am determined to do all in my power to see that racial seg regation is not paretised in the federalized national, guard at least in Connecticut. As I think you know, this policy is now specified by the army in Wash ington, and at the moment we can do nothing about it. "Howeyer, I am not content with this decision and, particu larly if I can get co-operation from other New England gov ernors, intend to do all I can to have such segregation stopped, at least in the national guard in our state. I have made my point of view publie, hoping that something may come of it "I should be grateful if you would see that a copy of this letter goes to the Negro veteran who was rejected." Recently, word has come from an agent of the War Dept, that it has no policy as stated. - It is a matter for the State to decide whether it shall have mixed or separate units of the State Na tional Guard. Chi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity met in Bridgeport recently to formu late plans for the observance of Col. Charles Young Memorial service in March. This chapter of Omega has a membership of twenty-one brothers. The Bridgeport Inter-Group Council recently sponsored a panel discussion and meeting on the Fair Employment Practice Bill. Mr. Madison SV Jones of NAACP and Mr. Richard Carter of Shipbuilders Union C. I. O. were members of the panel. ' A local attorney and representa tives of industry were also members of the panel. It was thought of the spokesman for management that more educa tion is necessary along the lines of fair employment rather than a Bill to enforce fair, employ ment. Mr. Janes asserted that it would be fine, if the Cham ber of Commerce and the Na tional Manufacturers Associa tion would undertake such an educational project. Father A. J. Cuffee, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Robert A. Detective Vincent McKelvey, in charge of youth work for the Bridgeport Police Department told of his problems that he en counters in his work. The mat ter of over 300 shoe shine boys on the streets of Bridgeport was discussed at length and it was voted to form then into some kind of organization or unit similar to the one in Hartford and New Haven. . The Regional Conference of the NAACP will be held in Greenwich, Conn., on March 29 and 30th. Mr. Walter White secretary of the Association will be the principal speaker on Sun day afternoon March 30th. Del egates and membres of the NAACP in Massachusetts, in Rhode Island and Connecticut are planning to attend this an nual meeting.
