If the Chapman meetings which are to he held in this city during the next two weeks draw such largo congre gations every evening as the opening meeting held in the M. E. ;chureh last evening at 7:30 o'clock drew then the campaign is at once a tremendous success. The church was filled even before the services began. The present cold snap has caused the local harbor to become a veritable ice sheet, and In consequence shipping is greatly Impeded. Two of the lar. gest oyster tugboats of the U. C. Rowe company forced their way Into the company's wharves here yesterday after a very rough trip from Gardi ner's Bay, and when they arrived they were thoroughly encased In Ice and much battered from the strenuosity of the trip. The tugs were the Hen ry C. Rowe and the Ruel Rowe, and are both strong ships. They came fully loaded with oysters for he local concern. The ships found Ice in the local harbor almost out to the lighthquse, but when they struck the Quinnjpiae their trouble hist began. It took four hours for the boats to make the short distance from the Tomllnson bridge to the company's houses at the side of the Ferry street drawbridge The ice in the river is said to be solid and about eleven Inches in thickness A large congregation was present at the 7:30 o'clock services held last evening at Christ church when the full choir rendered a special musical ser vice which wilt be the last until Easter. The Chapman campaign opened .very successfully - in this place last evening. At the service held at 7:30 o'clock in the Congregational church the congregation present occupied every available space in the spacious edifice. Rev. H. D. Sheldon, who has charge of the meetings in the bor ough, preached a most inspiring ser mon, while his helper, Benjamin Franklin Rutts, led the choir in 'the song service in a very tine manner. The Shelton Reading circle will meet with Mrs. Stiles A. Nichols this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. They then forced Davis Potter, a drug clerk, to open his store In which they Impris oned several citizens. Leaving a large guard In the town, the others galloped to View, five miles away, blow up Alfred H. Cardin's to bacco factory, containing 3.',00fl pounds of tobtceo and burned Cardin's barn, containing 10,000 pounds of tobacco. The damage aggregates $10,000, with half. in-much insurance. That Governor Hughes will renew to the senato this week his recommendation of last year that Otto Kel-?cy he removed from the office of state superintendent of In surance on the ground of inefficiency Is the general expectation here to night, though the governor will say nothing on the subject. The belief Is that the governor will transmit to tho senate, In support of his recommend ation, the report of Matthew C. Flem ing, the special commissioner appoint ed by the governor under legislative authority to Investigate the Insurance department. Mr. Fleming's report was mude public last week and con tains severe criticism of Mr. Keisey's administration In the department.
