BOND MARKET BROADER American Smelting Moves Up Sharply D., L. & V. Pumhaae Boosts Locomotive ' With Union Paciflc as tho market "leader" stocks reached new high levels for the year for certain Issues. Union Pacific shortly after 1 o'clock touched 139 6-8, coming out In large lots on the tape. Reading at tho same time moved up to 111 and Smelting, Amalgamated Copper, and various other active Issues showed much firm ness, The market was steady to firm all of the morning with about tho same volume of stocks as Monday, but with bonds considerably more ac tive. In the last hour stocks were quieter, with a tendency on the part of most issues to ease off a little. But bo pronounced weakness developed. It was such a recession as Is often seen after a sharp rise. X. X. X. X. The earnings of southern roads tho lost two weeks show what floods and tornadoes mean to railroad revenues. The Texas and Pacific lost week lost $174,286 gross, and Southern Railway 291,ftlfl and Loulsvlllo and Nashville $226,097. The bond market showed a broader tendency, being nearly twice as active as Tuesday. Among the features were Mercantile Marine 4 l-2s, Interbor-ough-Metropolltan 4s, Union Pacific convertible 4s, and United States Steel sinking fund 8s. Wabash 4 per cent, certificates were also quite largely traded In. That the trading In these bonds indicate absorption by the out side public was not altogether con clusive. Pools were operating In some of them. Arbitrage houses sold 10,000 rhares of Steel, Union TacHle and Ontario and Western. The ease In money in London was reflected In yesterday's call rate of 1 1-4 per cent. The con tinental selling of mining shares con tinued and exerted some Influence. Tho Pennsylvania loan was quoted at a premium of 3 3-8 per cent. American Smelting moved up sharply In connection with another advance In the price of lead tho third advance In a very few days. X pool was active In this Issue and tho street heard much talk about the re ported participation of the Rockefel lers In the management. The purchase of forty-nine locomo tives by tho Lackawanna railroad was made tho pretext for bidding up American Locomotive stock yester day. In Wall street efforts were made to have It appear that this order will be followed by others, greatly benefit ing tho manufacturing companies. Nothing, however, developed Indicat ing the placing of orders for much rolling stock at this time. i.:., n. i. &. v. c. 4 p.c. Bds. Chi., St. p., uVt. & Omaha.. CIMcmru Term. Trans do. pfd Cleve..
