Charles Henry Miller, the Ansnnla negro, who shot and killed his wife, Kllzabeth, nt the latter town, March 27, was sentenced to Imprisonment for life by Judge Case In the criminal superior court, yesterday. Warren W. Wilcox, of Hartford, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and theft, and was sentenced to from one to two years In state prison on the first court and one year on the second count. Ney of Fall River, Mass., ploat'ed guilty of embezzlement by agent and was sentenced by Judge (,'ase to pay a fine of $500. Ney was a salesman for the New Haven Tobacco Co., and between Jan uary 1 and November 8, last year, he was accused of having embezzled $962.27 belonging to the company, al though only $800 was lodged against him yesterday morning. The postnflico employes are watch ing with Intel est the reports from Washington this week In regard to the various measures which will be disposed of before Monday, according to the present schedule. One of the bills provides for a bet ter classification of those employes shove the grade of clerk who up to this time have been Ignored by con gress In Ihe general raise of govern ment salaries which went Into effect last year as a result of the higher price of things. They amount to 10 per cent, of the whole. Under the present arrangement some of the su perintendents will receive less com pensation than the clerks and car riers on July 1. Another measure provides for the retirement of superannuated govern ment employes when they reach the age of sixty-five and seventy years. The fund for the retirement Is provid ed by retaining about 3.5 of the an nual salary of each employe w ho will upon reaching tho retiring ago be en titled to receive 1.5 per cent, of his salary for each year of service. This bill Is the one presented by President Roosevelt. In each house and as amended by the committee on reform In the civil service Is now returned to congress by the chairman,' Frederick H. (illicit, of Massachusetts, with the approval of the committee.
