ATTKNDKO BY A 1.AROK AND REPRESENT ATIVB AUDIENCE. nt Rose church wi taxed to Its ut most capacity, Wednesday night, when a representative audience gathered to listen to th lecture by Prof Drake of Bistort, on the celebrated "I'awlon Play at glvaa at Oberammergau. The enter tainment was opened by an introductory peecb by the professor, followedjby a election by the orchestra, after which the professor in a well modulated voice began the lecture. The very beauti ful and effective scenes in the life of Christ were shown on the canvas In a very clear manner and elicited much praise from all present. The closing views were a series of tableaux of "Rock of Ages" and the colorings of these were about perfect. During the lecture the musical selections were given and special mention can be made of the solo of Fath er Smith, whose clear voice was heard to good advantage. J. Callahan was also In good voice, and the solos of the Misses Harrlgan and Lynch were of a high or der. The whole musical program was very nice and Mrs Oordon deserves cred it for her training. The lecture was a success and St Hose's church will net good sum as the result. V. J. B IX V OB TEIAL BEFORE JUDGE HOW ARD CURTH IN TIIR COMMON PLEAS COURT AT BRIDGE I'ORT. The assault case of James W. Katn against William J. Brew, teacher of the Pootatuck school, was tried on Wednes day before Judge Howard Curtis of the Court of Common Pleas. It was a civil action for damages, Mr Kiln asking for $500 Mr Brondhead, who eat on the steps at Taylor's hotel, where the as sault was committed, swore that Br :w truck Kain threee times with his clench ed fist, and this was also testified to by Kaln. Thomas J. Corbett, John Hubbell, John Bradley and Edward Troy appeared as witnesses for Mr Brew, their testimony trying to show Mr Kaln's Injuries were not as serious as claimed. Brew swore he only slapped Kain, first with one hand and then with the other. Judge Curtis reserved his decision. Messrs Beecher A Can fluid appeared for Mr Kaln and 'foomey & Lynch for Mr Brew. THE SAHDT HOOK POSTOFFICE TROUBLE. YOUNG BRADLEY NEGLECTED BIS BOOK KEEPING. After the accounting and thorough ex amination of the affairs at the Sandy Hook postefflce, last wek Thursday, by Inspector O'Brien and John J. Northrop, Postmaster .Bradley s accounts were found to be short $485 45. The acting postmaster, Mr Bradley's son, James F-, hat neglected the book work at tbe of fice almost entirely since last Angus' and It was somewhat a tangled mess to un ravel. Mr Bradley, Sr., felt keenly the disgraceful act of his son, and has many oympathlzers. The young man went to New Haven and appeared before the commissioners and was bound over un der $1000 bonds, in default of which he was taken to the New Haven jail. C. H. Gray found a beach wood tree on tbe Wolcott farm with the initials, lL li. C. April 21, 18o8." Also "A. W., April 21, 1858." This session of the Legislature is go ins to be shorter than some of its prede cessore, and a commendable spirit to cut down expenses U being shown. The resolution pensioning Dr Henry Bar nard at 81000 per year, adversely re ported by the committee on appropria tions and rejected by the House, was made the special order for next Tuesday at 1 :30 o'clock. Tbe House tabled the bill providing for an insane ward at the state prison, rejected the bill to pension state prison officials and passed the con vict parole bill. Several judges of local police courts were elected by concurrent votes, including Judge Bill and Associate Judge Perkins of the Hartford court. Mrs E. L. Mrs Julia Mallory, who has been a great sufferer and confined to her bed for years, has passed away. The funeral services were held at her home, Satur day, the 13th. Rev O. J. Range officiat ed. She was 79 years of age. B. N. Treat and familv have all been sick with the grip for the past six weeks. Mrs Frederick Schielke has been auite sick. Charles Kemp is on the sick list.
