public yesterday in the form of a lei
tetr to K. H. Gary, chairman, was not
even mentioned during the meeting
of the American Steel & Iron insti
tute here yesterday, it was learned
here today
It has been reported that the meet
ing of the institute would consider
reductions in view of the wage and
price cuts made recently by large
Independents.
Mr. Gary said at the close of the
meeting, however, that price reduc
tions had been mentioned only cas
ually ami announced his corporal ion

ting prices or lowering wages.
He said he bad received a letter
from Mr. Williams several days ago
and had heard yesterday afternoon
that the letter htd been mad., public
by its author, hut business affairs
had been so pressing he bad mil bad
time to read it. lie intended to do

ued.
The comptroller's letter calling on
Gary to reduce prices purports to
show by analysis of statements of
the corporation that it could reduce
prices materially and still earn fair
