OF SORROW FOR TWO DECEASED MEMBERS with ,'isited this MEMORIAL SERVICES CONDUCT ED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ATTRACT LARGE AUDIENCE IMPRESSIVE RITES ACCOMPANY CEREMONIES FOR THE DEAD. Many Ottawans gathered at the Elks' home yesterday to attend the annual lodge of sorrow of the organ ization. The services were held to eommemorale Dr. A. K. Herzog and David Samuels Jr.. of Marseilles, members of the Ottawa lodge, who have passed away during the past year. The services were held In the lodge room of the home at 3 o'clock. The services opened with a piano solo bv William Cordon, followed by the opening ceremonies of the ritual, after which the organization chaplain, C. M. Corbin, led in prayer. Miss Vera B, Ham then sang "Oh Rest In the Lord," anil Mrs. George P. Fisher sang "There Is no Death." Oscar Haeberle delivered a very beautiful eulogy on Dr. Herzog. speaking on the life of the former Ottawa man. who for years was a member of Ottawa lodge. At the close of Mr. Haeberle's ad dress George Welsh sang "Eye Hath Not Seen." The memorial address of the after noon was delivered by Hon. Thurlow Ksslngton of Streator. Mr. Essing ton. who is u very pleasing orator, spoke on the principles upon which Elkdom is founded, and paid tribute to the two members of the lodge who have passed away during the past year. Arthur Haliagan sang "The Vacant Chair" at the close of Mr. Essingtou's talk. The ritual of the organiation was then continued, after which Mrs. Geo. P. Fisher sang "These Are They." At the conclusion of the memorial ritual the chaplain, C. Iff. Corbin, pronounc ed the benediction. WW' f E. L. VOGEL CONGRESS BACK ON JOB AFTER 10 DAYS' Fl RESPITE ROM DUTY losing days of the BUSY SESSIONS ARE AHEAD OF NATIONAL LAW MAKING BODY WHICH BEGAN ITS GRIND AT NOON TODAY. Washington, Dec. ii. Congress re convened today for its regular win ter session and will be confronted al most Immediately with legislation which will keep it in session many months. Much of this legislation was left over from the special session which ended ten days ago. In addition there will be new legislation to be recom mended by Pres. Harding in his an nual message Tuesday. The opening session was short. In the senate a motion was made by Re publican leaders to displace the rail road relief bill, which is the unfinish ed business with the foreign loan re funding bill, which administration leaders have decided to press. The house will receive the budget and take up several minor bills left on the calendar on th special session. President Harding will uddress con gress In Joint session Tuesday and bis rooommendatlons will be dle on ed Wednesday and Thursday. On those days the senate will also get down to work on the foreign loan bill. In addition to the loan bill, the sol diers' bonus ami the permanent tar iff hills, which went over from the special session, will demand early at tention. Administration leaders have made no plans for bringing up the bonus measure until late in the win ter, but the tariff hill light will start early. The tariff bill bus been before the senate finance Committee since Au gust. The committee expects to re port it to the senate some time in January. The railroad relief bill will be dropped. In his message to congress the president will urge economy and a merchant marine subsidy. The president will insist upon an other revision of the tax laws in a special message later. Reduction of surtaxes to 25 or VI per cent will be recommended bv the president, it is understood. The Borah bill exempting American coastwise vessels from tolls through the Panama canal will be allowed to remain in the bouse committee for severul months If administration lead ers have their wuy. The bill wan passed by the senate In the special session but was promptly pigeonhole when it reached the house. The problem of the size of the bouse of representatives in accor mice with the new census also wlv come up before congress during ti, session. A reapportionment bill IV creasing the size of the house trow 486 to 4fio members Was reported by the house committee last session, tout was not acted upon. Considera ble opposition iB expected in the sen ate to increasing the size o the house at all and the president may he called upon to Intervene before the matter is settled.
