It was one of the prettiest baseball exhibi tions seen no at Fenway park in many a day. Tbe old timers around Boston were saying last- night it was the best contest of the season. Be that as it may. Kid Qleason was more than anxious to cop the game. He looked at the score board and saw what was happening in New York, then issued' new orders to his gang to step out and get some runs. . But Sam Jones was pitching for the Red Sox yesterday and he was having one of his good days. He al lowed the Sox only half a. dozen hits and was stingy with his passes. Claude Williams. Gleason's dap per little porulder, also pitched considerable of a game. He walked only one and allowed but seven hita. . - Jackson Hits Homer. i Chicago's lone run was made in he second inning, when Mister Joe Jackson, the first batter, hit the first pitched ball into the right field seats for a home run. Mister Joe's hit waa not one of those' Polo Grounds home runs. It traveled a mile high and almost killed a cod fish sitting high in the bleachers. Boston's two runs were made in the fifth inning. Walters got a two- bagger to start the inning. Sam Jonea fanned, bat Hooper shot a triple to right, and one run waa over, vltt knocked a long fly to Felsch and Hooper scored after the catch. New hope! pervaded the American yachting' camp today while the crew of Reno-1 lute waa giving America's cup de fender a "rundown" la preparation tor the race tomorrow that ' will mean defeat or another chance tor victory. v - Yesterday's victory, which was ia the nature of a penalty to Sham- rick IV for her superior sise, made the score 2 to 1 in races and In- spired tbe defenders with the belief that chances of the Lipton craft are! very poor because of her great Onto allowance. h - , Similar belief apparently preralTa in the ranks of the British yachts men whose dreams of taking the cup back to England la three straight races was shattered yes terday by the game little American which sailed a dead heat with the. big challenger in .a boat-for-boat race. .. 1 Big Topsail Cat 71 In the hope of cutting down the big time allowance. Captain Burton' bas decided to remove the big top sail of tbe challenger. This vol decrease the handicap to six min utes and 40 seconds from seven 1 minutes and one second, according! to H. De B. Parsons, chairman of the race committee. ' The fourth heat of the race yea' terday was historic- ta that for the first time in the long history of tke cup races two sloops salted a dead heat Tbe challenger got away it seconds ahead of the defender and finished ahead by exactly the same margin. Experts pronounce tomorrow's race the crucial one of the series. Sailed over the triangular course, in which N the superiority of the Lipton sloop was shown Tuesday, It will give a slight advantage to the challenger, it was believed. If Resolute wins It will bring about a tie of two races each and win bring the decisive heat up Saturday over the windward and leeward course which the American craft has shown "at an advantage. Captain Burton sailed a much, better race yesterday on Shamrock IV than be had in the preceding beats. The superior generalship of Captain Adams waa not so. ob vious. But the work of the Ameri can crew was much better than that of the Britishers. t V
