Brand Landlord Profiteer Indig
nant over a raise in rents, tenants
living in a four family apartment at
821 Oneida avenue have hung out a
sign branding their landlord a prof
iteer and calling upon the world to
witness the fact. The sign is about
nine feet long and between 20 and
24 laches wide.. Stretched across
the porch railing on the second
floor apartments, the strip of can
vas flaunts the following message
to the breeze: "ProHteering Land
lord, Raised Rent From $35 to
$42.60 Per Month." The property
Is owned by W. J. Bryson, 209
Brady street, who recently acquired
title of Charles H. Booth, a real
estate agent. Mr. Booth purchased
the apartment less than three
months ago of Mrs. F. E. McKee,!

are occupied by William Schaeffer,
William Hawkins, Joseph Firnchild
and Ralph Helble. The last two oc
cupy the second floor apartments
and are the owners of the novel
sign.
Hotel 0b Fire Guests at the
Hotel Chandler, 608 Harrison street,
were routed from their slumbers
early Sunday when fire broke out
in one of the rooms. A lighted
cigaret, dropped by a roomer, set
fire to a mattress and caused dam
ages estimated at $50. A cigaret
dropped in a pile of rubbish and
shavings in the rear of the Kahl
building. Third and Ripley streets,
started a fire later in the day and
resulted in a call for firemen from
the central station.
Rob MaeBine Shop Breaking the
lock on the door, thieves early Sun
day morning looted the machine
shop of Eifl.il Martin, located in
Donahue, and escaped with tools
and machinery valued at between
$300 and $400. The robbery was
reported to Sheriff Henry A. Kuehl
Sunday. An investigation carried
oa yesterday failed to disclose any
traces of the thieves. Welding ma
chinery, drilla, hammers, etc.,. were
stolen. ..-.

a shipment of California wine and
bitters, which passed through the
local freight offices, Ross Emery
was arrested by Special Agent
Spoey of the Rock Island road yes
terday morning. He was released
on $100 bond, furnished by his
wife. According to the railroad de
tective Emery, iwho is employed as
a freight handler, is implicated in
the opening of a shipment, which
was found to be short several bot
tles of wine and bitters. The charge
is petty larceny.
Burglars Foiled Burglars were
frustrated when they attempted to
plunder the home of Nelson Mc
Clelland, 1510 East Eleventh street,
Sunday morning, it was reported
to the police. Yeggs bad succeeded
in 'Jimmying" the front window of
the house, when they were inter
rupted by a light winking on in
the upper rooms, fled to a nearby
automobile and escaped.
Death Record The death of Mrs.
Annetta A. Stark occurred Sunday
afternoon at the family home, 11
Crestwood Terrace, Davenport, and
followed an illness of 11 months'
duration.
Miss Annetta Grant, daughter of
Alexander ami Phoebe Grant, was
born in Bettendorf, Aug. 3, 1861.
She was united in marriage to
Ephraim Stark, Dec. 14. 1882. She
was a life-long member of the Pres
byterian church.
The remains ot James A. Atkin
son, former Davenporter, who died
at Sykeston, N.. D.. Dec 10. arrived
in Davenport yesterday and funeral
services were held in the after
noon. Burial took place in Oak
dale cemetery. Mr. Atkinson came
to Davenport in 1865 and from that
tune until 1880 he waa connected
with the Davenport Spice and
Hominy mills. The mills burned in
1880 and Mr. Atkinson moved to
North Dakota.
