County Officers Throughout State

Driving; Safer
Asserting that failure to comply
,1th state automobile head lights
regulations is responsible for a
jifga percentage of accidents on
public highways. Secretary of, State
Joois J. Emmerson today launched
t campaign for rigid enforcement
of the law.
In a letter to sheriffs and police
throughout the state Secretary Km
acron asked them to cooperate
with Investigators from his office to
bring about closer observance of
the law, especially provisions re
garding the dimming of headlights.
"Make driving at night safer," Is
. th word sent out to authorities.
"A strict enforcement of tho
traffic laws will reduce accidents
od the highways at least 90 per
cent," Secretary Emmerson said.
"The state law provides that
erery automobile must be equipped
with two lights in front and a red
Ugat in the rear, which must be
lighted when the car is in operation

set to sunrise.
'The headlights must be strong
enough to be visible for a distance
of at least 200 feet and unless
equipped with anti-glare devise or

pany of Chicago has been engaged
to' stage the home talent minstrel
show for the Zal grotto of Moline
Feb. 23, 24 and 25. Proceeds of the
show will be nsed for entertain
ment Of visitors to the national
grotto convention to be held in the
tri-cit-es the latter part of June.
It will be staged at the Palace the
atre, Moline.
A director from the Joe Bren
company will arrive in Moline Feb.
10. Thirty men and 20 girls will
be nsed in the cast. These will be
elected from among the best talent
ia the community.
As an added feature, the New
York store wUl put on a s'.vle show
in connection with the minstrels.

Twenty-five miles of paving In
1922 is the program of the Daven
port city council. The estimated
cost of the project is $827,000. It is
, tha Largest program ever outlined
in Davenport.
Of the 25.3 miles scheduled to be
surfaced, 13.6 miles are to be new
paving, while 11.7 miles are resur
facing jobs. New paving will cost
approximately $35,000 a mile, while
the resurfacing will cost about $30,
000 a mile. Bids may be called for
at the next meeting of the council.

BETTENDORF PLANS
SCHOOL BOND VOTE
Bettendorf will vote on a $100,000
bond issue for new schools at tha
annual school election Monday,
March 6.
Ten. and possibly 12 additional
rooms will be added to the town's
two school buildings according to
plans outlined by the county super
intendent of schools.
Both buildings were very much

In January, 1922, a? against 73 in
Janoary. 1921- Sixty-two of last
month's arrests were on state
charges and 24 were on city
charges. Liquor, the records show,
vas responsible for 21 arrests last
month. Three offenders violated
the naticnal prohibition law. One
was arrested for selling liquor in
