Voters of Rock Island county dis played a great broad streak of com munity pride yesterday when they authorized the issuing of $1,000,000 bonds fcr hard roads in the county. That pride is unconquerable. It has never failed to manifest itself in support of any meritorious prop osition when the issue was prop erly presented. William E. White side, the indefatigable president of the Rock Island County Good Roads association, laid his cards on the table. No individual or set of individuals was inflated by the association with extravagant prom ises; the good roads program was presented as a proposition for the good or the entire community. And the broad way in which it was pre sented won the day. The taxpayers were told that it would cost them money, yet that did not stifle that old pride. Un official newspaper returns this noan gave Miller a 10-vote lead over OT.ne for county treasurer and Truxeil appears to lead Richmond by 38 votes. ' . ed after the official canvass, nm it is safe to say that it has carried by a comfortable margin. The money raised by the sale c bonds will pay for 77 miles of hard roads in the county. About thirty five miles will be constructed in the upper end of the county and about forty-two in the lower end. Begin June 1. Mr. Whiteside announced this morning that he thought it wculd je possible to dispose of the pre iminaries in time to begin work .n the grading by June 1. By next . Rock Island, ies of traffic to the shipping points . g0. Rock Island, and cities. There will be no difficulty in dis posing of the bonds, according to Mr. Whiteside. Paper of this char acter always finds a ready market. Employ Local Men. Perhaps the most gratifying fea ture of the splendid victory is that the road construction will give em ployment to many men of the coun ty. Approximately $800,000 will be expended for labor, and only local men will be hired for the work. Scores of men will probably be making the dirt fly by June 1. The voting of the bond issue will cause to be added to taxes of dtod- erty owners the sum of 20 cents on ! each $100 assessed valuation in the city. It will add about 6 2-3 cents an acre to the taxes of the farmer. In only one district in the county , did the bond issue fail to get the ' proper support, and that was in the j lower end of the county. Returns I from this territory were among the last to come m, yet there was never any coubt as to the issue being carried after the first few returns from the city precincts were re ceived. Community pride was the biggest factor in putting the proposition across. No individual or set of in dividuals will benefit directly by the road improvement, but will j work to the prosperity of the en (tire community, accordine to one citizen. The proposition was given the biggest boost in Coal Valley, due perhaps to the activities of local union 362, United Mine Workers of America, through Rudolph Krapp, RETAIN SEAT IN ASSEMBLY McCa&krin and Abbpy Hare So Dif flcnlty at District Polls? His lead in this county was sufficient his supporters claimed, to carry him through the other counties of the district. Effort to divide the Rock Island county vote - in a- three-way local contest diverted some votes but Maucker, on face of incomplete re turns in his home county, was run ning two to one against the com bined vote of his opponents legislative primary for both parties : Rock Mer- Hen Island, cer. derson.
