Tho Chineso argument in favor of keeping tho feet of women bound is an ingomons oriental presentation of the usnal occidental reasons formerly given against women's education, for keeping their minds and wills in fetters. In the letter of our correspondent from China there is- told tho story of a visit to foot swathed Chiurso ladies. The preference for too small feet is explain 11I in a way that reads very much like tho reasons offered nowadays by " re nionrtrants" against women going out of their 8phere" into tho interests of tho life of politics. ThoChincss women mnst not le allowed to walk freely and tho exercise of nil tho wuwlcs of their feet, for fear of seeming nnwua anly to nieu. American women liuiht not lie given political freedom for very mu;h tho same reasons. Tha logic is aliont the same in both cases. And in both the nued of freedom la the same. For women to bceoiuo freer and strong' cr, thero is notiiirg like an enlarged horizon in life and udded responsibility. whether in Chiua or America. Boston Transcript. Bin. Mrs. Molesworth, one of the cleverest and most renowned of all the modern writers for children, is a woman of Scotch and English blood, born in Hol land. She is a grave, gentle, rather dedicate looking creature, with a slight figure and soft, hrown hair, parted on her forehead. She is a believer in me thodical work, and her rule is to ait down at a certain tir.ic and compel her self to write to the end of two pages. If by that time she finds that she has not got into the spirit of ber work, 6be puts it aside, but she generally finds that it runs smoothly after the first effort. Ckrirodr laW"Ycar oliosr latsa. Tlie following alarming episode la re ported from Abassia, a watering place on the gulf of Venice, as having oc curred during tho recent sojourn of the Servian court in the little seaside town. Ring Alexander and his father were in tho habit of taking their breakfast in the open air along with the members or the suit, who one morning had taken their places at the table when the young king and his father returned from a walk. The former bade the gentlemen go on with their breakfast, as lie intended to have a bath first. King Milan and the courtiers partook of their meaL and in three-quarters of aa bonr King Alexan der came back and was immediately served with a cup of tea. Ho had no sooner swallowed a large draft than In dashed the enp to the ground anl made a most horrid face. King Milan Jumped up and exclaimed that it was poison. A regular panic ensned among the mem bers of the suit. The court physician poured out another cupful and tasted it. At that moment the chef hurried np. quite pale with excitement, and said: "I beg your majesty's pardon. I will stake my head that there is no poisoning in the case. It was the cook a mistake He brewed tho tea with aea water instead of spring water." The king was the first to recover his composnre and indulged in a hearty laugh. Milan embraced his son and wept aloud. The suit felt as if relieved from a dreadful nightmare. Xeue Freie Presse. A Rocky atoemtahi TanaeL A notable engineering feat was ac complished recently in the completion of the boring of the Busk-Ivanhoo railway tunnel under the continental divide of tho Rocky mountains at Hagerman pass, Colorado. The tunnel is almost two miles long 0,393 feet and is through solid gray granite. It took 3 years and 20 days, of 20 hours work each day, to boro the big hole. It is 10,800 feet above sea level through the top ridge of tho conti nent. The water draining from the one side of the mountain under which it is driven runs to the Atlantic ocean, and from the other to the Pacific Its con struction has cost f 1,000,000 and 20 hu man lives. The tunnel, which is on the line of the Colorado Midland railway, the Santa Fe's central route to Califor nia, substitutes two miles of track for ten and does away with one of the most expensive railway climbs in the world.
