A Brooklju nan who was hard np ran op against his double, ivhaae finan- cial aitnation was equally depraarfng. EJicn waa aiitoanded at the rceem blance he bore to tho othor, and by common consent they joined fortunes and rooms together. A day or two aft er one of the two Dmraios Wan knocked down by a wagon and aostained a frac ture of tho log. He was carried home, and the brilliant idea at oneo occurred to his roommate to tako advantage of the rcwmblance between the two and draw f 25 from an insurance company far as long a period as possible. Bor rowing the injured man's clothes, he paid a visit to an avuncular relative, from whom he borrowed a few dollars, lie went next to an insurance company and took out a policy. Two weeks later a claim came for total luablement, and tho injured man was easily identified as the holder of the policy, his room mate being cartful to keep out of the way. There could bo no doubt as to the man's leg being broken, and as the officers of the company recollected that tho man who took cut the policy was sonnd in wind and limb there eeemed little reason to doubt that tho accident had occurred Mnce the protnium was paid. No question wns raised, and for throe cr four weeks tho (25 was paid with a regularity highly MtUfactory to the well member of the firm. But the cick man came to the conclu sion that he was cot fretting a square deal. Unable to leave hi bed, ho could not take part in the jollifications in which hi comrndo delighted, and it ap peared to him that Lo was not getting more than aiont 20 cents on tho dollar of tho weekly allcwoncK. H 3 demanded an equal division on tho ground that. although his friend had done all the thinking, ho had really playod the lead ing role by getting himself knocked down and run over. It was the usual caso of rogscs falling out and honest maa dariving the benefit. The disputes wer ocrhoard by an adjoining room er, who promptly cava away the story. with tho result that tho weekly payments ruiio to a sadden nnd uirfrewine end. A caio duuumiiiraiiiig the value of a time deter occurred ia Ohio. A man carrying a large auuui-.t of accident in surance had fallen a few days behind in his preniinm, but oiin afternoon a relative brought in the tmaH amonnt and obtained a receipt for it. Thut day tho insured was crippled in a street car accident in Coluinlms, and it was of conrso claimed thut tho premium was paid before the accident took place. The facts were distinctly favorable to tho injured men, fcr investigation proved that there were two street car accident at about tho same place the same day, two or three people being in jured in each accident. The police records threw no light on tne subject. and the man appeared to have been taken away by his friends. There was littlo doubt that the premium was paid between the two accidents, though there waM much difficulty in fixing the exact time. It was finally ascertained thnt a tele gram had been sent from Columbus an hour after tho first accident asking to have the premium paid, and this cir cmustnnce was in itself so suspicious thst payment f the benefit was refused. A compromise was finally agreed to. but considerably later two witnesses were found to prove that the man was hurt in tho first accident, so that if the premium was paid in consequence of the telegram fraud was evidently con templated. But for the difficulty in proving tho exact hour of payment tho claim would not have been seriously considered. As it was, however, tho applicant's caso was on the face of it umto a strong one. Every one has heard of tho man who had been reported as dead, and whose friends had collected the insurance, in dulging too freely in whisky and mak ing a complaint to tho insurance com pany that tho money had not been fair ly divided. Instances in which money has been claimed on account of the death of people still living are much more numerous than is generally be lieved. In one case an Ohio stockman carrying an accident policy for f 10,000 took some stock to New York. On the return trip ho disappenied from tho train while it was crossing a bridge. and his bat being subsequently recov ered it was contended that he had fallen off and had been drowned in the river. The company took advantage of the 00 day rule and then offered to pay the money if a bond were put np to cover the amount. The neighbors of the wid ow fixed np an irreproachable bond, and the money was paid. The company was by no means con vinced that the man was dead, and ar rangements were made to have the widow watched. Three years elapsed, and tho instance was well nigh forgot ten, when a dispatch was received to the effect that the lady was disposing of her furniture and evidently about to move. A detective was employed to keep track. Tho family went to Chi cago, and the detective followed. Aft er a day's delay they took a train for the northwest, the detective also on the train. Away cat in the wilds of Mon tana the family alighted at a small sta tion, where ft was warmly welcomed by the long lost stockman who was promptly put under arrest. The bonds men were good for the monej-, and on this occasion the compan1 attained no loss beyond the expense Aocorred in the watching. New Orleans Times Dome- crat. - American ptunps are known In China and Japan, as well as in all pacts of S'TiE INTERSTELLAR MEDIUM. ! Bvaa a Scleatlata Pea Case Aaeqaatoly Desert be Its Traaaraadcsa rll.a. That apace is not void ia conceded. That it is filled with a medium capable of transmitting light and heat ia net questioned. This medium is believed to 1 uniform in density and elasticity, but the exact nature of its constitution in unknown. Some believe it to be molecular, like gas, w hile 'others ques tion if its structure has been correctly defined. - It makes no direct impression upon the senses and 13 known only through effects produced, and yet, what ever be its nature, it is known to trans mit a wave of light at the rate of 80.300 miles per second, there being, as a mean value, within the spectrum about ".0.000 waves in an inch,or more than 60,000,- 000,000,000,000 in the distance, passed over in ono second. When it is considered that waves are transmitted through this medium in all conceivable directions with tho same velocity, some faint conception may be had of its intense activity. The com plicity of the waves is transcendent, for each shade of light has its own wave length, there being about 36,000 waves to the inch in red light and more than 64,000 in violet, and outside the visible spectrum there ore less in number in one direction and more in the other. Every self luminous body in the uni verse is imparting to this medium waves of these varying lengths all traveling with a sensibly constant velocity. When it is considered that the count less number of stars and sens, scattered promiscuously throughout limitless space, are producing such waves, radi ating from each in all possible direc tions, it would seem that if they did not actually destroy each other they would so interfere as to produce "confusion worse confounded, " and the impressions upon tho eyo of an observer would be valueless. Rut, on tho contrary, the scientist believes that this medium truly and faithfully transmits to tho remotest space every wave imparted to it, pre serving with the strictest integrity its individuality except that planets and other solid. Indies may destroy tho waves they intercept. A star ton or more years ago started a wave which just now, we will snp- posc. arrives ct the earth and writes its own record on some sensitized plutes, though tho star may be 6,000,000,000,- 000 miles away. From theso impres sions the physicist finds perhaps that tha star is double, although the most powerful telescope had failed to divide it; that the two revolve about each other, and he determines their probable, orbit, masses and velocities. Or perhaps be finds, as in the remarkable star of 1802, that it changes from a star to a nebula in a few months. In all this no question is raised in regard to tha in tegrity of the recoid, nor whether in its long journey any planet, 6un, comet, meteorite or nebula has interfered to modify or in any way corrupt the atory it was commissioned to tell. What faith! But this is littlo more than the shadow of an illustration, for Herschel, the astronomer, thonglit 'it probable that we can see nebuhe from which it has taken light COO, 000 years to reach the earth, during whicli ' tini'o the interstellar medium has been faith ful in transmitting at tho rate of more than 11,000.000 miles per minute tho impulse committed to it, notwithstand ing its path has been crossed and re- crossed by other waves without number. Pen cannot adequately describe the transcendent properties of this wonder ful medium called the "luminiferons ether" nor too highly exalt that faith which enables one to implicitly believe the truthfulness of the stories commit ted to him. Ono is led to exclaim with the psalmist: "O Lord, how manifold are thy works. In wisdom thou host made them alL Science. A Great Invention. "I have here," began the energetic man as he bundled into the young law yer's office, "the greatest invention of the age. . It was cases that the lawyer wan;d. not inventions, and he said something rather rude, but the energetic man proved to be a philosopher and merely smiled. "I call it," pursued tho visitor, "the eternal "kisser, because there is simply no end to the kisses it bestows. It is this." He hauled out a spray of mis tletoe covered with white berries. This interested tho young lawyer, who raised his evebrows inquiringly. "Mistletoe," proclaimed the agent, "is very scarce this year, and a bunch containing a score of lierries would bankrupt a poor man. Now, this groat invention brings happiness within reach of all. Tradition permits you a ki-ss for each and every berry, you know. You hold this spray above your lieloved's head so. ou bend so and kiss her. Then you grab a berry so and pull it presto, it flies back again in place. The leaves and berries are india rubber, sir, and twodid you say? Fifty cents Thank you, sir. Good day." Harper " Magazine. When the Columbian year is passed, we will all begin to wish to possess some thing to recall this historic time. Only a few of us have the souvenir silver half dollars, but almost anybody can obtaic canceled Columbian postage stamps, aaJ of these a very pretty souvenir can b made. The more denominations you can collect the better, both for the sake of appearance and value. Soak the stamps for a few minutes in very hot water, so that they can be easily removed from the envelope, and then let them dry. (jet a queer shaped bottle or a common earthen vase of some pretty form and gild the inside of the neck. Then paste the stamps neatly on tne vase in "rows of brick" fashion. so that the entire surface of the vase is covered. Use a separate denomination for each row, being cartful to combine the colors of the different rows so that they look well together. Another way, which you may perhaps prefer, is to gild the whole vaso and ar range a design of stamps in contrasting colors in tho center, with a border of them at the top and bottom. Ativ boy or girl who lias ever been to a kinder garten will be able to make a good de sign for this decoration. Eugenie of Battenber-g. Here is a picture representing the lit tle Princess Victoria Eugenie of Batten- berg, whose sixth birthday occurred on Oct. 21, in the arms of the queen s faith ful Indian attendant and secretary, the Munshi Abdul Karim. From her earliest infancy, says "Lady's Pictorial," the lit tle princess has been an object of affec tionate respect to Abdul Karim, whose kindly disposition has had much to do with the queen's partiality for him. Her majesty is constantly finding some new occasion of showing her regard for her oriental attendant, the latest mark of her favor being to give him and his wife' a pretty cottage and garden at Frogmore for their occupation. As the cottage is within a stone s throw of Frogmora, House the children of Princess Henry of Eattenberg will have their dusky friend quite at their beck and call, and will be able to exercise over bun that childish despotism to which he, like Bscst strong men, is so ready to ssbnat.
